UgandaToday: When Museveni Usurped the Role of Uganda Cranes Coach

In an unexpectedly comical twist at a recent interaction with the Uganda Cranes CHAN team, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni briefly abandoned the business of state to assume the role of football coach—leaving players, officials, and onlookers in stitches.

The moment came when Museveni turned to goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa, demanding a technical explanation for why he had abandoned his goalposts to charge toward the backline in a desperate attempt to stop an opponent’s strike.

“What happened to your fullback?” the President quizzed, with the sharp authority of a tactician interrogating his squad after a costly mistake.

Not to be outdone, Mutakubwa—clearly sensing the humour in the moment—retorted with a witty counter: “Let the fullback answer that one.”

The room erupted in laughter, proving that football, even at the highest level of power, remains a game of shared responsibility.

While Museveni has over the years been celebrated as a political strategist, his spontaneous “coaching clinic” showed that a jack of all trades can also be a master of humour, even in a field far removed from his expertise.

Whether the Cranes took tactical lessons from the exchange remains debatable, but the lighthearted banter injected a refreshing twist into what was otherwise a formal engagement.

For once, the head of state swapped his commander-in-chief hat for a coach’s whistle, proving that in Uganda, even football can become political theatre—laced with laughter.
