UgandaToday: Frank Gashumba Drags Pastor Kayanja To Police Over Alleged Death Threats

By Uganda Today Reporter

Ugandan political commentator Frank M. Gashumba has formally petitioned the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) to investigate Pastor Robert Kayanja of Lubaga Miracle Centre over alleged threats of violence and death directed at him and members of his family.

In a complaint dated October 30, 2026, and addressed to the Director of CID, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Maj. Tom Magambo, Gashumba accuses Kayanja of threatening his life in a video that has reportedly circulated widely on social media.

The complaint, which bears a CID receipt stamp dated November 2, 2026, and another from the Office of the Minister for Internal Affairs dated November 3, 2026, requests police intervention into the matter.

Frank Gashumba’s formal complaint to the Criminal Investigations Directorate, requesting investigations into alleged death threats by Pastor Robert Kayanja.

Gashumba Alleges Death Threats

According to the complaint, the alleged confrontation followed Gashumba’s appearance on a radio programme in October, during which he discussed religious leaders accused of exploiting vulnerable members of the public.

Gashumba maintains that he did not mention Kayanja by name during the broadcast but spoke generally about what he described as false prophets, drawing from biblical teachings, including Matthew 7:15, which warns believers about false prophets appearing in sheep’s clothing.

He alleges that Kayanja subsequently launched a personal attack against him.

In the complaint, Gashumba claims that Kayanja, while visibly angry in a video, threatened that he would die violently, allegedly comparing his fate to that of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Gashumba says the alleged comparison has caused him serious concern, particularly because it was accompanied by threats against members of his family.

He argues that the statements should not be dismissed as mere religious expressions, insisting that threats of violence warrant police attention regardless of the language in which they are delivered.

Fears Possible Violence Beyond Public Threats

In a separate public statement accompanying the complaint, Gashumba said he could not rule out the possibility that the alleged threats might extend beyond public declarations.

He expressed concern that someone who openly threatens another person’s life could potentially organise individuals to carry out violence privately.

Gashumba said his decision to report the matter to police was intended to ensure that the allegations are investigated and that his safety and that of his family are taken seriously.

“I hope police will accord this complaint the attention and seriousness it demands. A threat is a threat, whether it is dressed as a prayer,” Gashumba stated.

Gashumba Renews Criticism Of Religious Exploitation

Beyond the alleged threats, Gashumba used his statement to renew his criticism of religious leaders whom he accuses of exploiting vulnerable people through claims of miraculous healing.

He questioned why some self-proclaimed miracle workers do not demonstrate their alleged healing powers in verifiable medical settings, including intensive care units.

Gashumba also raised concerns about reports of individuals being encouraged to abandon antiretroviral therapy (ARVs), cancer treatment and other medical interventions in favour of purported spiritual remedies.

He further alleged that some religious leaders take advantage of women and contribute to the breakdown of marriages through inappropriate conduct.

The businessman said his criticism was motivated by what he described as patriotism and social justice, arguing that vulnerable members of society must be protected from exploitation in the name of religion.

He maintained that genuine miracles, in his view, are acts of God and should not be commercialised through the sale of purported anointing oils or the promotion of paid miracle services.

These claims form part of Gashumba’s broader criticism of certain religious practices and have not been independently established in relation to Kayanja through the complaint.

Police Investigation Awaited

The complaint places the matter before the CID for investigation into the alleged offence of threatening violence, which Gashumba cites under Section 81 of the Penal Code Act.

Uganda Today has not independently verified the video cited in the complaint and has not established whether police have commenced investigations or whether Pastor Kayanja has formally responded to the allegations.

The matter is expected to draw public attention amid continuing debate over religious accountability, the protection of vulnerable worshippers and the responsibility of public figures to address disagreements without threats of violence.
