National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has thrown his weight behind a fundraising campaign seeking financial support for jailed opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and his colleagues, making a personal contribution of Shs5 million together with his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi.

The intervention by Bobi Wine and Barbie is expected to inject fresh momentum into the solidarity campaign initiated by prominent human-rights lawyer Eron Kiiza, a former member of Dr. Besigye’s legal team.

In a September 4 statement, Bobi Wine described Besigye as “an icon of our struggle” and “a pillar of resilience,” praising the veteran opposition leader for remaining steadfast despite years of detention, persecution and legal battles.

The fundraising drive is intended to mobilise resources towards Besigye’s welfare and mounting legal expenses while he and his colleagues remain in detention.

Bobi Wine Makes Personal Contribution

Bobi Wine disclosed that he and his wife had decided to contribute Shs5 million to the campaign, while simultaneously calling upon other Ugandans to support the initiative according to their means.

His intervention goes beyond the financial value of the contribution.

As one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures and a politician with a substantial national and international following, Bobi Wine’s public endorsement gives the fundraising initiative a significantly wider platform.

“Let us contribute whatever we can to support this cause,” Bobi Wine said, urging supporters to participate in the campaign.

He portrayed the contribution as an act of solidarity with a political elder whose years of opposition to the government have made him a central figure in Uganda’s contemporary political history.

Eron Kiiza’s Campaign Gains Fresh Momentum

The campaign was initiated by lawyer and activist Eron Kiiza, who has been closely associated with Besigye’s legal defence and advocacy efforts.

Kiiza’s fundraising appeal had already begun attracting contributions before Bobi Wine’s intervention.

By September 3, activist Agather Atuhaire reported that the campaign had received Shs8.12 million under the banner #StandWithKizzaBesigye.

Bobi Wine’s public announcement therefore comes at a significant moment for the campaign, providing both a direct financial contribution and a high-profile endorsement that could encourage more Ugandans and supporters abroad to participate.

His intervention was also publicly welcomed by Winnie Byanyima, who thanked Bobi Wine and Barbie Kyagulanyi for standing in solidarity with Besigye and for their contribution to the support fund.

From Political Rivalry To A Common Cause

The fundraising campaign also presents an important moment in the relationship between different generations and formations within Uganda’s opposition movement.

Besigye has for decades been one of the country’s most prominent challengers to President Yoweri Museveni, while Bobi Wine emerged much later as a major political force, particularly among younger Ugandans.

Although the two belong to different generations of Uganda’s opposition politics, Bobi Wine’s latest intervention underscores the continuing symbolic importance of Besigye to sections of the country’s opposition movement.

By publicly supporting the fundraising initiative, Bobi Wine is effectively urging his supporters to view Besigye’s legal and welfare needs as a broader cause transcending individual political organisations.

“They Can Jail Our Bodies, But Not Our Solidarity”

In his message, Bobi Wine cast the fundraising effort as a demonstration of solidarity in the face of political pressure.

He argued that attempts to isolate opposition figures would not necessarily destroy the networks of support around them.

His message ended with a call for unity, saying that efforts to create disarray among supporters would not succeed.

The statement has consequently transformed what might otherwise have remained a relatively small fundraising appeal into a more prominent public solidarity campaign, with Bobi Wine using his considerable public profile to amplify Kiiza’s initiative.

A Campaign Beyond The Shs5 Million

While the Shs5 million contribution is significant, the broader importance of Bobi Wine’s intervention may lie in his appeal for collective participation.

Rather than presenting the campaign as one dependent on large individual donations, he encouraged people to contribute whatever they could.

For Eron Kiiza and the organisers of the campaign, Bobi Wine’s contribution could prove particularly important in attracting additional donations and keeping public attention focused on Besigye’s circumstances.

For Bobi Wine, meanwhile, the gesture reinforces his portrayal of the struggle for political freedom and democratic accountability as a cause extending beyond any single political party or individual.
