UgandaToday: Heartbreaking Update On Besigye’s Health: ‘He Is Learning To Walk And Talk Again’
By Uganda Today Reporter
Fresh concerns have emerged over the health of veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye after activist Doreen Nyanjura described an emotional encounter in which she found him undergoing rehabilitation to regain his ability to walk and speak.
A Painful Recovery Journey
In a personal account shared after meeting Besigye, Nyanjura said she was deeply moved by his condition, describing how he was being assisted with speech exercises using a chart of simple words, including “dog” and “boy”.
Although he can hear and appears mentally alert, she said, Besigye has not yet regained his ability to speak. He reportedly communicates by tapping letters on an alphabetical chart, allowing visitors to piece together his messages. He also uses sign language when he becomes tired.
‘It Could Have Been Worse’
Nyanjura recalled that Besigye acknowledged her shock at his condition by communicating that “it could have been worse”.
She also described the physical difficulties he faces, including shaky hands and an inability to hold a bottle of water independently.
According to her account, Besigye remembers waking up in the intensive care unit at Mulago Hospital days after the events surrounding his court appearance, but does not clearly remember what happened in court.
Despite his challenges, Nyanjura said his sharp mind and enduring spirit remained evident throughout their conversation.
A Message To Supporters
Besigye reportedly told Nyanjura that Uganda was “back in the 1890s”, while encouraging supporters to remain resilient. The account also highlighted his concern about the political climate and the value of simply staying alive under the current regime.
Nyanjura said Besigye’s condition was painful to witness but urged supporters to keep him in their thoughts and prayers as he continues his recovery.
