UgandaToday: Uganda’s Radical New Bar: Praise Aloikin Opoloje Calls On Generation To Fight For Rule Of Law
KAMPALA, Uganda — The 39th Radical New Bar (RNB) session of the Uganda Law Society has provided another platform for debate on constitutionalism, accountability and the future of the rule of law in Uganda, with Aloikin Apoloje delivering a passionate message about the responsibility of the present generation.
Opoloje Challenges The New Generation
Opoloje urged the generation of young Ugandans to recognise that establishing the rule of law is a responsibility that cannot be postponed indefinitely. Her message placed emphasis on the need for citizens to defend constitutional principles, demand accountability and ensure that justice applies equally to everyone, regardless of social status or political influence.
Her message resonates with the wider debate about how Uganda can strengthen independent institutions, protect fundamental freedoms and make constitutional guarantees meaningful in the daily lives of ordinary citizens.
Radical New Bar Leadership Reaffirms Its Mission
The session was opened by the acting leadership of the Uganda Law Society Council, representing the Radical New Bar, a movement associated with efforts to transform legal practice and strengthen the independence of the legal profession.
The RNB’s guiding agenda rests on four pillars: decolonisation, demilitarisation, democratisation and digital transformation. Its leadership has consistently presented these principles as central to building a more accountable legal profession and advancing access to justice.
The opening remarks were in line with the broader call for lawyers to look beyond courtroom practice and take an active role in defending constitutionalism, human rights and the independence of the Bar and Bench.
A Generation’s Responsibility
The message from the session is that the rule of law cannot be secured by lawyers alone. Citizens, young people, civil society and public institutions all have a role in ensuring that the Constitution is respected and that those entrusted with public power remain accountable.
For Uganda’s next generation, the challenge is to turn demands for justice and accountability into sustained civic engagement and respect for constitutional principles.
