A New Gateway For Ugandan Businesses
The new route is expected to make business travel more convenient, strengthen commercial relationships and improve access to markets across the continent.
Uganda’s government sees the connection as an opportunity to expand exports, particularly coffee, tea, fruits, horticultural products, edible oils and pharmaceuticals. Ghanaian investors are also being encouraged to explore opportunities in Uganda’s manufacturing, energy, information technology and healthcare sectors.
The route could help businesses reduce travel-related costs and make it easier to meet prospective partners, negotiate contracts and explore investment opportunities.
Fifth-Freedom Rights Could Boost Revenue
An important development accompanying the launch is Ghana’s approval of fifth-freedom traffic rights for Uganda Airlines between Lagos and Accra.
The approval allows the carrier, subject to applicable operating arrangements, to transport passengers and cargo between the two West African cities, potentially opening an additional revenue stream beyond traffic travelling to or from Entebbe.
Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake has expressed ambitions to increase the four-weekly service as demand grows. However, the commercial success of the route will depend on passenger numbers, competitive fares and reliable operations.
Tourism And Regional Integration
The new service also offers opportunities for tourism operators in both countries. Ugandan tour companies could attract visitors from Ghana to experience wildlife, national parks and cultural attractions, while Ugandans gain easier access to Ghana’s historical and cultural destinations.
Improved connectivity could support the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by facilitating business engagement and the movement of people between markets.
The Commercial Test Ahead
While the launch marks an important milestone, sustained demand, operational reliability and competitive pricing will determine whether the route delivers lasting economic benefits.
For Uganda Airlines, Accra represents more than another destination. It is an opportunity to demonstrate how stronger African air links can help Ugandan businesses reach new customers, attract investment and participate more actively in continental trade.
