WASHINGTON/TEHRAN — The United States military has successfully rescued a downed airman who survived for more than 36 hours behind enemy lines in Iran, following what officials are describing as one of the most complex combat search-and-rescue missions in recent history.

Jet Shot Down in Hostile Territory
The incident began when an American F-15E fighter jet was shot down during ongoing hostilities between the United States and Iran. While one crew member was rescued shortly after the crash, the second—identified as a weapons systems officer—remained missing in rugged terrain.

U.S. officials say the airman ejected safely but landed deep inside hostile territory, triggering an urgent and high-risk recovery operation.

36 Hours of Survival and Evasion
Despite sustaining injuries, the airman managed to evade capture for over a day and a half, relying on advanced survival training. Reports indicate he navigated mountainous terrain, hid in narrow rock formations, and avoided detection by Iranian forces and armed groups reportedly searching the area.

Military analysts say the officer’s ability to survive under such conditions underscores the effectiveness of the U.S. military’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training programme.

Elite Forces Lead High-Risk Rescue
The rescue mission involved a coordinated deployment of elite U.S. units, including special operations forces, supported by drones, fighter jets, and helicopter teams.

Officials revealed that the operation required real-time intelligence and deception tactics to outmaneuver enemy forces. The extraction was carried out under intense pressure, with aircraft coming under fire during the mission.

At least two U.S. aircraft were reportedly damaged during the operation and later destroyed to prevent sensitive military technology from falling into enemy hands.

Safe Extraction and Medical Evacuation
The airman was eventually located and airlifted out of Iran, before being transferred to a U.S. military facility in Kuwait for urgent medical treatment.

Pentagon officials confirmed that all rescue personnel returned safely, with no fatalities reported among the recovery teams.

Rising Tensions in the Region
The dramatic rescue comes amid escalating conflict between Washington and Tehran, raising fears of a broader regional confrontation.

Iran has claimed its forces engaged U.S. aircraft during the rescue attempt, though details remain contested. Meanwhile, U.S. officials have signaled readiness to respond to any further threats in the region.

Security experts warn that the incident could mark a turning point in the ongoing confrontation, with both sides demonstrating heightened military capability and resolve.

A Testament to ‘Leave No Soldier Behind’
The successful recovery of the stranded airman reinforces the long-standing U.S. military doctrine of never abandoning personnel in combat zones, regardless of the risks involved.

Analysts say the operation will likely be studied for years as a case example of modern combat rescue under extreme conditions.
