Mubende: A tragic incident occurred at the Nakayima Tree Shrine in Mubende District on Wednesday morning, claiming the lives of four people and leaving three others injured. The incident happened when a branch of the ancient Nakayima tree unexpectedly broke and fell, striking eight people gathered at the shrine for traditional ceremonies.
Eyewitnesses reported that one person died instantly, while the others were rushed to Mubende Regional Hospital. Tragically, two individuals succumbed to their injuries upon arrival, and a child who had been placed on oxygen also died while receiving treatment.
The event has sent shockwaves across the region, sparking speculation about the cause of the tragedy. Locals and worshippers have questioned whether it was an accident or a spiritual phenomenon, as it is commonly believed that the Nakayima tree—a symbol of divine power—never harms anyone when its branches fall.
The Shrine and Its Significance
The Nakayima Tree Shrine is a cultural and spiritual landmark in Mubende District, located approximately 149 kilometers from Kampala on the Kampala-Fort Portal Highway. Standing at an impressive 40 meters tall and believed to be 400-500 years old, the tree holds deep historical and spiritual significance.
The shrine is named after Nakayima, the wife of King Ndahura of the legendary Bachwezi people, who are said to have possessed supernatural powers. The tree is considered sacred and is believed to possess healing powers, attracting visitors seeking miracles, relief from diseases, and solutions to infertility.
December, in particular, sees an influx of worshippers hoping for blessings as they prepare for the new year.
President Museveni’s Past Visit
President Yoweri Museveni once visited the Nakayima tree, underscoring its cultural importance. Over the years, the site has gained popularity as a symbol of heritage and spirituality, drawing pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond.
Safety Measures and Investigations
In the wake of the tragedy, Hajji Umar Lule Mawiya, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Mubende, has suspended all gatherings and ceremonies at the shrine until further notice. This decision is intended to facilitate investigations by the police and other authorities and ensure the safety of future visitors.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life. Our immediate priority is to identify the victims and thoroughly investigate the circumstances of this incident,” the RDC stated.
The police have confirmed that the victims were not from Mubende District but had traveled to the shrine for worship.
A Community in Mourning
The incident has left the community grieving and questioning the spiritual and physical safety of the site. While some view it as a tragic accident, others believe it may be linked to the mystical powers attributed to the Nakayima tree, known as a mother figure who loves and protects all.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue. Meanwhile, families of the victims are being supported by local leaders and hospital staff.
This tragedy casts a somber shadow over a site revered for its history and healing powers, raising critical questions about safety at sacred spaces.
