Uganda Today Edition: Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko Enthroned As 7th West Buganda Bishop
St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako—March 30, 2025 In a ceremony rich with tradition and spiritual significance, the Rt. Rev. Gaster Nsereko was today enthroned as the 7th Bishop of the West Buganda Diocese at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kako, Masaka City. The event drew a congregation of clergy, laity, and dignitaries from across Uganda, all gathered to witness and celebrate this pivotal moment in the dioceses’ history.
Bishop Nsereko’s journey to this esteemed position is marked by decades of dedicated service within the Church of Uganda. Born in July 1965 in Bbira Naakuwadde, Wakiso District, he committed his life to Christ on May 30, 1993, in Namukozi, Mityana Diocese. His clerical journey began with his ordination as a deacon on December 9, 1989, at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Namukozi, followed by his priesthood ordination on December 10, 1990, at the same cathedral. His unwavering commitment and service led to his appointment as a Canon on January 17, 2010, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako.ugandatoday.co.ug
Throughout his ministry, Bishop Nsereko has held several key positions within the West Buganda Diocese. He served as the Archdeacon of Kakoma Archdeaconry and as the Vicar of St. John’s Kakoma Church of Uganda. His leadership roles extended to being the Provost of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako, Sub-Dean, and Archdeacon of Masaka Archdeaconry. These roles have equipped him with a profound understanding of the spiritual and administrative needs of the diocese.ugandatoday.co.ug
The path to Bishop Nsereko’s election was marked by a competitive and, at times, contentious selection process. Initially, the diocesan nomination committee presented Rev. Moses Kayemba, the diocesan secretary, and Rev. Patrick Ssimbwa, the Archdeacon of Sembabule Archdeaconry, as candidates. However, allegations of procedural irregularities and favoritism led to the annulment of these nominations and a restart of the selection process. This development paved the way for Bishop Nsereko’s candidacy and subsequent election by the House of Bishops on February 16, 2025, during a session at Acaki Hotel in Kitgum Diocese. ugandatoday.co.ug
Bishop Nsereko’s election carries additional significance as he becomes the first bishop of West Buganda Diocese to be a native of the area, addressing long standing calls from local Christians for indigenous leadership. His enthronement is seen as a unifying moment, with hopes that his leadership will bridge divides and foster spiritual growth within the diocese.
In his inaugural address, Bishop Nsereko expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and outlined his vision for the diocese. He emphasized the importance of unity, spiritual renewal, and community development. “I am humbled by this calling to serve as Bishop. With God’s guidance, I pledge to continue fostering faith, love, and development for the glory of God and the betterment of our people,” he stated. ugandatoday.co.ug
As Bishop Nsereko assumes his new role, the West Buganda Diocese looks forward to a period of renewed spiritual vigor and communal harmony under his stewardship.
