Uganda Today Edition: Political Tensions Escalate as NUP Faces State Crackdown
Kampala, Uganda – The political climate in Uganda has grown increasingly volatile following a series of dramatic events at the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters. The ruling government was sent into shockwaves as NUP foot soldiers orchestrated a grand parade in celebration of their party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s 43rd birthday. The display of solidarity and strength among party loyalists underscored NUP’s growing influence, despite continued government repression.
The celebratory parade, which showcased disciplined foot soldiers in formation, drew widespread attention and concern from state authorities. Government agencies viewed it as a symbol of NUP’s expanding political muscle, prompting increased surveillance and a heavy-handed response from security forces.
Opposition Unites in Prayer Amidst Rising Repression
As part of the activities to free incarcerated Dr. Kizza Besigye, NUP organized a prayer service that attracted notable opposition figures, including Mugisha Muntu, Winnie Kiiza, Winnie Byanyima, Erias Lukwago, and Martha Karua from Kenya among others. The gathering served as a moment of unity and resilience for the opposition, as they condemned the shrinking democratic space in Uganda.
Shortly after these events, in a move widely criticized by human rights groups, Uganda Police and the army laid siege to NUP’s headquarters for two consecutive days. The operation saw the ransacking of the party’s premises at Kamwokya and Kavule, an act NUP has described as state-sponsored vandalism and intimidation.
Kyagulanyi Speaks Out on Vandalism at NUP Offices
Following the raid, NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) expressed outrage over the destruction and looting of party property:

“Our leaders went to check on our premises at Kamwokya and Kavule after the criminals left. We’re still assessing the extent of damage, but we can confirm that they stole many things, including computers, valuable documents, money, hundreds of t-shirts, and other branded materials. We shall update the nation after we have fully taken stock. We shall definitely take action against this criminality!”
The aftermath of the siege has sparked national and international condemnation, with political analysts viewing it as yet another sign of state-sponsored suppression of opposition voices.
Hon. Mpuuga: A Regime in Panic Mode
Former leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, weighed in on the unfolding crisis, delivering a scathing critique of President Yoweri Museveni’s government:
“The signs are ominous in this land that the political air is foul: A tired regime doing its final rehearsal to foil a people-driven effort to bring freshness to the politics and the country we call home. The next election is already a stillbirth, botched and corrupted by processes and actions. Gen Museveni clearly listens only to his own echoes. He has lost everything to time and space. His actions lay in the survival rung but can’t survive the nation.”
Mpuuga further stressed that the persecution of opposition leaders, including the long-standing suppression of Dr. Kizza Besigye, reflects the regime’s desperation to cling to power.
“The continued haunting of People Power/NUP supporters since 2019 can never cleanse the intentions of the regime. Gen Museveni has the sole option of what remains of his checkered legacy – slow down, climb down, and listen to the people. Setting in motion processes for a transition from the Museveni rule, which is beyond redemption, is the only remedy. Attempted internal regime transition, which is being mooted, is political fraud and can only worsen an already exacerbated situation.”
Mpuuga called upon all Ugandans to reclaim their rightful voice in shaping the country’s future, urging them to question the direction Uganda is heading.
NUP Mobilization in Kayunga Gains Momentum
Despite the heavy clampdown on NUP’s activities in Kampala, the party remains steadfast in its grassroots mobilization. Hon. Tebandeke, a key NUP figure, has been leading a vibrant mobilization drive in Kayunga, rallying local communities to stand firm against oppression. His efforts signal NUP’s commitment to reaching every corner of Uganda with their message of change.
As Uganda braces for a politically charged period, the recent events surrounding NUP underscore the deepening crisis within the nation’s governance structures. With opposition figures doubling down on calls for political transition, the ruling government finds itself at a crossroads. Will Museveni heed the growing calls for change, or will Uganda continue its descent into an era of intensified political repression?
