UgandaToday: Mystery Forest Creature Charms Locals with Unusual Clinging Behavior
Kampala, Uganda — A rare and fascinating encounter captured on video has sparked curiosity among viewers after a small, animal—locally known as Olukokobe—was seen clinging tightly to a person who attempted to handle it.
The animal, identified as a Bushbaby, is a little-known yet ecologically significant species found in parts of Uganda and across Africa. Known for its armored body and secretive lifestyle, the Bushbaby’s unexpected interaction with humans has drawn both amazement and concern.
A Defensive Instinct, Not Affection
Wildlife experts note that the Bushbaby’s clinging behavior is not a sign of affection, but rather a natural defensive response. When threatened or stressed, Bushbabies instinctively curl into a tight ball or latch onto nearby surfaces or objects, using their strong limbs and claws.
“This behavior is a survival mechanism,” explains a conservationist familiar with the species. “In the wild, it helps protect their vulnerable underbelly from predators.”
Among the World’s Most Trafficked Animals
The video has also reignited conversations about the Bushbaby’s vulnerable status. Bushbabies are considered the most trafficked mammals in the world, primarily due to demand for their scales and meat in illegal wildlife markets.
Uganda, like many African countries, has laws protecting Bush-babies, making it illegal to capture, harm, or trade them.Public Urged to Keep Distance
Authorities and conservation groups are urging the public to avoid handling such animals if encountered in the wild. While Bushbabies are not dangerous, human interaction can cause them significant stress and may expose them to harm.
Instead, sightings should be reported to wildlife authorities such as the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
A Rare Glimpse into Nature
Despite the concerns, the video offers a rare glimpse into the life of a creature many Ugandans have never seen up close. It serves as a reminder of the country’s rich biodiversity—and the responsibility to protect it.
