KAMPALA – Uganda’s First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, is expected to make her first public appearance in nearly five months when she joins President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the consecration of their daughter, Pastor Patience Museveni Rwabwogo, as a bishop later this month.

According to the official programme for the event, the President and the First Lady are listed as Guests of Honour at the ceremony scheduled for August 23, 2026, at Covenant Hill, Maya, where Pastor Patience will be consecrated to the episcopal office of Bishop of Covenant Nations Churches in Uganda and beyond.

The ceremony is also expected to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Covenant Nations Church, the ministry founded and led by Pastor Patience Rwabwogo.

A Significant Return to the Public Eye

Should the First Lady attend as scheduled, it will mark her first public appearance since she reportedly fell seriously ill in March 2026, prompting months of public concern over her health.

President Museveni disclosed in June that his wife had suffered a severe illness beginning on March 21, although the nature of the illness was never publicly revealed. Shortly afterwards, Janet Museveni released a message thanking Ugandans for their prayers and confirming that she was recovering.

Her anticipated appearance is therefore likely to attract significant national attention, with many Ugandans viewing it as a reassuring sign of her continued recovery.

Daughter to Assume Episcopal Office

Pastor Patience Museveni Rwabwogo has, over the years, established herself as one of Uganda’s prominent evangelical leaders through Covenant Nations Church.

Her consecration to the office of bishop represents a major milestone for both the church and Uganda’s Pentecostal movement, formalizing her spiritual leadership over Covenant Nations Churches in Uganda and its affiliated ministries abroad.

President Museveni has previously praised his daughter for dedicating her life to Christian ministry, describing her as hardworking and committed to spreading the Gospel. The First Lady has also publicly spoken of her gratitude for seeing one of her children called into ministry.

International Christian Leaders Expected

The consecration is expected to draw prominent Christian leaders from across the world.

The programme indicates that renowned American evangelist Bishop Dr. LaDonna Osborn will serve as the chief celebrant.

Also expected are Nigerian Christian leader Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye and his wife Pastor Folu Adeboye, whose participation is likely to attract thousands of worshippers and clergy from Uganda and beyond.

Celebration of Two Decades of Ministry

The event will simultaneously celebrate 20 years of Covenant Nations Church, a ministry that has grown from a local congregation into a network with regional and international outreach.

Church leaders say the anniversary will reflect on two decades of evangelism, discipleship, leadership development and community transformation under Pastor Patience’s leadership.

National and Religious Significance

Beyond its religious importance, the ceremony carries national significance because of the participation of Uganda’s First Family.

For many observers, the event is expected to symbolize both a personal family milestone and the First Lady’s gradual return to public engagements following months of recovery from illness.

If the programme proceeds as scheduled, August 23 is likely to become one of the most closely watched religious events on Uganda’s calendar this year.
