By Uganda Today Newsroom

Exiled Ugandan novelist and renowned human rights activist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija has broken his silence on a long-standing personal controversy involving his estranged partner, Ms. Anne Whitehead — a woman he once described as a loving companion during his most vulnerable days in exile.

In a passionately worded statement posted on his personal platforms, Kakwenza — known for his bold literary style and outspokenness against authoritarianism — opened up about his past romantic involvement with Whitehead, who he claims has led a sustained campaign of malice, cyber-bullying, and slander against him.

Kakwenza displayed their love postcards, the most eye catching one is the one which was assuring Kakwenza that he was about to be a father once again.

“For the last three years, Ms. Anne Whitehead has subjected me to cyber-bullying by falsely accusing me of many things, including rape and abuse,” he wrote. “She went ahead, together with bankrolled ghost women, and wrote to different organisations that were supporting me to withdraw the same.”

Kakwenza, who fled Uganda after alleged state-sponsored torture and later gained asylum in Germany, described Whitehead not only as a former lover, but also as a caregiver during one of the darkest chapters of his life. He credits her for standing by him when he was grappling with dermatological ulcerations, PTSD, and fractured bones — all injuries he sustained while in Ugandan custody.

Yet, Kakwenza now claims that Whitehead’s current accusations stem from heartbreak and vengeance, rather than truth or justice.

“She’s merely a jilted lover who hobnobbed with two other equally jilted women to tout malice and slander against me… I found it honorable to protect our child and the great memories we once shared, and didn’t defend myself, nor did I see any sense in speaking out against her toxic public manipulation.”

The award-winning author, known globally for his fearless narratives about state brutality and political corruption in Uganda, accused Whitehead of manipulating social media narratives and riding on what he terms the “irrational Me Too populism” to destroy his career as both a writer and lawyer.

Kakwenza maintains that the accusations brought against him by Whitehead and others in Germany eventually crumbled under scrutiny, with courts finding no merit in the claims — even awarding him state compensation.

“It was an extension of political persecution — transboundary harassment by the Ugandan government,” he added, implying that his private woes may have been weaponized by forces aligned against his political activism.

In a notable twist, Kakwenza revealed an attempt to privately support their child, saying he once offered £5,000 for child upkeep through a mutual friend, which Whitehead allegedly ignored.

A Call for Respectful Separation

Kakwenza used the revelation to address a broader issue around gender dynamics, feminism, and the treatment of men in the public eye, warning against what he sees as a growing culture of weaponising heartbreak into damaging false accusations.

“Women, when you fall out with a man, it should never translate into rape, abandonment, child neglect, hate, or abuse… If you can’t have a man, don’t destroy his reputation with lies,” he stated.

He concluded by publicly forgiving Whitehead, asserting that he has no desire to wage a war of words, but hopes the truth reaches those who have heard only one side of the story.

“Either way, I publicly forgive her, and I hope that wherever she trades lies about me, they’re aware!”

Public Reaction and Context

Kakwenza’s statement has stirred reactions online, with some hailing his emotional vulnerability and others calling for more accountability and sensitivity when addressing matters involving past abuse allegations — regardless of their legal outcomes.

This is not the first time Kakwenza has found himself at the center of controversy. In 2021, he was abducted and tortured by Ugandan security forces after publishing his novel The Greedy Barbarian, a scathing satire of state corruption. His experiences of detention and exile have since become part of a broader human rights advocacy campaign across Europe and beyond.

As the debate continues, Kakwenza’s story serves as a complex reminder of how the personal and political can dangerously intertwine — especially in the lives of public figures.
