UgandaToday: Agather Atuhaire Revives Debate on Anita Among’s Alleged Extravagant Spending

By Uganda Today Reporter

Ugandan activist, lawyer and governance critic Agather Atuhaire has once again ignited national debate over public accountability after resurfacing explosive claims about the lavish expenditure habits allegedly associated with outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.

In a strongly worded video commentary now circulating on social media, Atuhaire passionately details what she describes as shocking levels of political extravagance within Uganda’s parliamentary leadership, accusing the Speaker’s office and the entire parliamentary commission of prioritizing selefish luxury spending while ordinary Ugandans struggle with economic hardship.

Activist Agather Atuhaire has reignited debate over parliamentary expenditure and political accountability in Uganda.

The Furniture Allocations That Sparked Outrage

During the video discussion, Atuhaire revisits controversial 2022 parliamentary expenditure allocations in which the Speaker allegedly budgeted approximately UGX 990 million for furniture at her private residence, while her deputy reportedly received about UGX 880 million for a similar purpose.

According to Atuhaire, the figures symbolize what she calls the normalization of elite excess within Uganda’s political establishment.

The activist questions how such enormous sums could be spent on household furniture in a country grappling with collapsing public healthcare, unemployment among youth and persistent poverty in rural communities.

She argues that the expenditure exposed the widening gulf between political leaders and ordinary citizens who continue struggling with the rising cost of living.

Atuhaire further suggests that public office in Uganda has increasingly become associated with prestige, luxury and personal enrichment rather than service delivery.

“A Country Funding Luxury While Citizens Suffer”

In the emotionally charged video, Atuhaire criticizes what she portrays as a culture of entitlement among top government officials.

She reportedly argues that while schools lack basic facilities and hospitals continue facing shortages of medicine and equipment, parliamentary leaders appear comfortable allocating nearly a billion shillings to decorate private homes.

The activist also references broader concerns about expensive convoys, designer fashion, luxury vehicles and extravagant lifestyles increasingly associated with senior public officials.

According to her, such spending patterns demonstrate a dangerous moral disconnect between Uganda’s ruling elite and the realities facing millions of citizens.

Agather Atuhaire’s Rise as a Fearless Civic Voice

Agather Atuhaire has over recent years emerged as one of Uganda’s most influential anti-corruption activists.

Originally trained as a journalist and lawyer, she became widely known through investigative reporting and later through civic activism focused on transparency, governance and accountability.

Her activism gained national prominence during online campaigns scrutinizing parliamentary expenditure, procurement practices and alleged misuse of taxpayers’ money.

Through digital platforms and public commentary, Atuhaire has consistently challenged state institutions and political leaders over accountability concerns, earning admiration from sections of civil society and opposition supporters.

Her work has also attracted international recognition, including global human rights awards celebrating her advocacy for transparency and democratic governance.

Anita Among Continues Facing Public Scrutiny

Outgoing Speaker Anita Annet Among has remained a deeply polarizing political figure in Uganda.

While her supporters praise her political mobilization skills and loyalty to the ruling establishment, critics continue questioning the scale of expenditure associated with the Office of the Speaker during her tenure.

The resurfacing of the furniture allocation controversy is likely to intensify public debate over government spending priorities, especially at a time when many Ugandans continue expressing frustration over corruption scandals and economic pressures.

Political analysts say activists like Atuhaire are increasingly shaping Uganda’s accountability discourse by using digital platforms to simplify budget information and bring controversial expenditures directly into public conversation.

The Growing Power of Digital Activism

Atuhaire’s commentary reflects the growing influence of online civic activism in Uganda, where social media has become a powerful tool for exposing alleged government excesses and mobilizing public opinion.

Her ability to translate complex budget allocations into emotionally resonant public conversations has made her one of the country’s most recognizable governance critics.

Whether celebrated or criticized, Agather Atuhaire continues positioning herself at the center of Uganda’s ongoing national debate about corruption, accountability and the ethics of political leadership.
