Uganda Today: The right honourable deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 11th Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, before joining NRM-O was a firebrand of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Who is Thomas Tayebwa?

Thomas Tayebwa is the Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament of the Republic of Uganda having been elected to the position in March, 2022. He represents Ruhinda North Constituency in Mitooma District in Parliament, a position he assumed unopposed in 2016 and effectively defending his seat in 2021 Parliamentary elections. He is a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement Organization (NRM-O).

Rt. Hon. Tayebwa, a son to Mzee Daudi Bangirana and Ms. Abby Komuhangi of Bitereko village in Mitooma District, was born on November 10th 1980. He is married and blessed with a son.

Tayebwa attended Kigarama Primary School, Kigarama Senior Secondary School for Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and later joined Ruyonza Secondary School for Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).

He joined Makerere University, one of the finest institutions of higher learning in Africa. He holds a Masters of Business Administration (ESAMI), a Bachelors of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (Hons), both from Makerere University. He also possesses a Certificate in Negotiation from Harvard Law School and a Professional Certificate in Parliamentary Affairs from International Centre for Parliamentary Studies, London.

He joined elective politics in 2015 and passed through unopposed as a member of parliament on NRM ticket, and immediately distinguished himself as a “peacemaker” in the10th Parliament. As one of the political doyens, Hon Tayebwa rode on the strength of mind, negotiation skills and understanding of the law, to have things done.

He was a member of the Natural Resources, and National Economy Committees of Parliament.

After the 2021, presidential elections, he was appointed the Government Chief Whip, a position he held until he was elected Deputy Speaker.
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa is a Pan-Africanist and a well-known anti-corruption crusader. An entrepreneur with interests in communications and media, culture and heritage, education, transport, security and manufacturing.

Hon. Tayebwa is a renowned philanthropist and loves God. He founded TARU Foundation which has supported several community projects across the country, and sponsored several children from vulnerable backgrounds to attain education, medical care etc. He has facilitated several youth start-ups with capital, offered business mentorship and has become a role model in the country.

He is a Rotarian with a title of Major Donor. He is an avid golfer and Formula One fan. He loves reading and getting involved in community engagements.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa has been a champion for good governance, transparency and accountability. His stance on affordable health care, political dialogue, free education for all and clean energy, precede his reputation.

He has been an influential voice for Uganda at home and abroad, and continues to fight for the peoples’ well-being: working hard to protect the national values, ensuring peace and stability, protecting the environment, changing the unfair scholarship system, lowering the cost of living, improving service delivery and creating jobs for Ugandans.
