AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND — Leaders, authors, advocates, community workers and award recipients from different parts of the world gathered in Auckland, New Zealand, for an international edition of the Beacon of Hope Mission Awards, an event centred on resilience, service, cultural connection and social impact.

The Auckland gathering marked another chapter in the international journey of the Beacon of Hope Mission, following previous events in New York and South Africa.

Founded by award-winning author and Global Ambassador of Hope Kelly Markey, the Mission seeks to recognise individuals whose personal experiences and work demonstrate courage, leadership, resilience and service to others.

Markey said the Auckland event was intended to go beyond the traditional concept of an awards ceremony by creating an environment where people from different cultures could share experiences and inspire action.

His personal circumstances added a further dimension to the message.

Following the Auckland event, Govender was preparing to donate a kidney to a friend — an extraordinary personal act that echoed the evening’s broader emphasis on compassion, sacrifice and service.

Govender is a recipient of the 2025 Beacon of Hope Mission Diamond Award of Excellence.

For Markey, his decision demonstrated the distinction between speaking about hope and putting it into practice.

“Pastor Garon is not merely speaking about hope — he is demonstrating what hope looks like when compassion demands something of us,” Markey said.

Personal Loss Becomes A Platform For Advocacy

Lived experience was another major theme of the Auckland gathering.

A particularly emotional moment came when Gagandeep shared his experience of losing his sister to suicide.

His testimony resonated with Markey, whose own brother’s death by suicide contributed to the inspiration behind her award-winning book, The Life of Jayandra.

The sharing of such personal experiences formed part of the Mission’s wider emphasis on transforming adversity into advocacy and using individual stories to encourage others facing difficult circumstances.

Health advocacy also featured prominently.

Fredric Doss of Grace Medicals challenged participants to place greater emphasis on prevention, awareness and early intervention rather than waiting until illness becomes a crisis.

Individuals Recognised For Resilience And Community Service

The Auckland ceremony recognised several individuals whose work and experiences were presented as examples of resilience and community service.

Christiana John received the Resilient Leader Award, recognising her ability to turn adversity into service and purpose.

Reflecting on the recognition, John said resilience should not be interpreted as the absence of struggle.

“I’ve never felt that resilience means you don’t struggle. I think it means you keep finding a way forward, even when things are difficult,” she said.

Longstanding community service was also recognised through the Community Impact Award, presented to Pastor Vee.

In another significant moment, organisers introduced the inaugural Beacon of Hope Legacy Award for Pastor Nelson Yankasamy, whose decades of service were considered to have extended beyond the scope of the original award category for which he had been nominated.

His family described the recognition as deeply humbling, invoking the expression “Elroi — the God who sees.”

The Auckland event also provided a platform for the international anthology Manifesto of Hope, which brings together authors whose stories examine adversity, transformation, advocacy and social impact.

New Zealand co-authors Lee Ann and Luanne participated in the official launch and panel discussion and were also recognised through the Beacon of Hope Mission Awards.

The anthology reflects the Mission’s belief that personal experiences can become a source of encouragement and guidance for others.

Rather than allowing difficult experiences to remain private, participants were encouraged to transform their stories into platforms through which others can find strength, understanding and hope.
