UgandaToday: Ruhamya Kainerugaba Graduates From Sandhurst As Bakyira Ruyondo Makes History

Museveni Welcomes Grandson Into UPDF As Debate Over First Family’s Military Legacy Deepens

Uganda’s First Family has marked another significant military milestone after Ruhamya Kainerugaba, the eldest son of Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom alongside fellow Ugandan officer cadet Andrew Bakyira Ruyondo.

The graduation, held during Sandhurst’s Sovereign’s Parade on August 7, 2026, saw the two Ugandan cadets commissioned after completing the academy’s demanding 44-week Officer Commissioning Course.

For Ruhamya, the occasion represents the continuation of a remarkable three-generation military association involving his grandfather, President Yoweri Museveni; his father, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba; and now himself.

President Museveni subsequently received the two newly commissioned officers at State House Entebbe and publicly congratulated them.

“Now, God has blessed me with one of my grandchildren, Ruhamya, joining my big family of UPDF,” Museveni said while congratulating Ruhamya and Bakyira. He also encouraged young Ugandans to consider military service, saying it provides a good foundation.

A Father And Son Sandhurst Connection

Ruhamya’s graduation has particular political significance because his father, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is himself a Sandhurst graduate.

Muhoozi joined the UPDF as an officer cadet in 1999 and graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2000 before being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

Twenty-seven years later, his son has followed almost the same path.

In May, Gen. Muhoozi shared photographs comparing his own Sandhurst training with photographs of Ruhamya undergoing military exercises at the academy.

“Father and son going through the same hardships. Separated by 27 years,” Muhoozi wrote.

Ruhamya first joined the UPDF as a private in June 2025 before being selected for officer training at Sandhurst. His transition from private soldier to newly commissioned officer adds another chapter to the military career of the Museveni-Kainerugaba family.

Bakyira Ruyondo Steals The Sandhurst Spotlight

MUSEVENI CELEBRATES GRANDSON AFTER SANDHURST GRADUATION Ugandan 🇺🇬 President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated his grandson, Ruhamya Kainerugaba, and fellow Ugandan officer cadet Andrew Bakyira Ruyondo after their commissioning from the prestigious Royal

While Ruhamya’s graduation attracted attention because of his family background, fellow Ugandan Andrew Bakyira Ruyondo returned home with one of the academy’s most prestigious distinctions.

Bakyira was named the best international cadet in his intake and received the International Sword, also known as the Overseas Sword.

The award is presented to the international officer cadet judged to have demonstrated the strongest overall performance throughout the 44-week commissioning course, including leadership, military skills, physical and mental resilience, attitude and overall performance.

Bakyira was among 247 cadets commissioned during the Sovereign’s Parade. His name was engraved on Sandhurst’s honours board as “CC253 A Bakira — Uganda.”

His achievement gives Uganda another reason to celebrate its longstanding relationship with the prestigious British military institution.

Is Bakyira Also Museveni’s Grandson?

No credible evidence currently establishes Andrew Bakyira Ruyondo as a grandson of President Yoweri Museveni.

The confusion appears to have arisen because Bakyira graduated alongside Ruhamya and was received by President Museveni at State House. Museveni referred to Ruhamya specifically as “one of my grandchildren” and then congratulated Bakyira as his colleague.

Available reporting identifies Bakyira’s parents as James and Beatrice Ruyondo, who travelled from Kazo to the United Kingdom to witness their son’s historic graduation.

The distinction is important: President Museveni’s public statement identifies Ruhamya as his grandson, but it does not identify Bakyira as another grandson.

Therefore, based on the evidence presently available, Bakyira should not be described as Museveni’s grandson.

Who Is Andrew Bakyira Ruyondo?

Andrew Bakyira Ruyondo is a Ugandan UPDF officer who hails from Burunga Sub-county in Kazo District.

Before joining the Sandhurst commissioning course, he attended Ntare School, one of Uganda’s well-known secondary schools.

He comes from the Ruyondo family, which has historical links to Uganda’s political and military history, particularly the National Resistance Army struggle of the 1980s.

His parents, James and Beatrice Ruyondo, were present at Sandhurst when he was commissioned.

Bakyira’s family history is particularly notable because the wider Ruyondo family has been associated with Uganda’s political history for decades. Historical accounts published by New Vision describe the late Nathan Ruyondo as a figure whose vehicle was used by the young Museveni in connection with the 1981 attack on Kabamba Barracks. Nathan Ruyondo was later detained during the political upheavals of the early 1980s and died shortly after Museveni came to power in 1986.

A Powerful Political Picture

The Sandhurst graduation has nevertheless produced a politically striking picture: the son of Uganda’s CDF and the grandson of the President entering the country’s officer corps at a time when the military occupies an increasingly prominent position in Uganda’s political conversation.

Ruhamya’s commissioning means that the Museveni family now has three generations with direct military connections.

President Museveni has been Commander-in-Chief throughout his presidency; Gen. Muhoozi rose through the UPDF ranks to become Chief of Defence Forces; and Ruhamya has now been commissioned as an officer.

That progression is certain to attract political attention, particularly because Gen. Muhoozi has for years been at the centre of speculation and public debate over Uganda’s political succession.

The younger Kainerugaba’s entry into the officer corps does not, by itself, establish any political succession plan. But his military career inevitably places him within a family whose political and security influence has shaped Uganda for decades.

From Family Milestone To National Debate

For the Museveni family, Ruhamya’s graduation is being presented as a moment of discipline, service and generational continuity.

For Bakyira’s family, the occasion is arguably even more remarkable: their son emerged as the best international cadet at one of the world’s most prestigious military officer-training institutions.

The two Ugandans therefore leave Sandhurst with different stories but a shared destination — the UPDF.

Their commissioning also demonstrates the continued importance Uganda attaches to sending its future military officers to internationally respected institutions for advanced leadership and command training.

For Ruhamya, however, the Sandhurst journey has an additional meaning. His graduation places him directly in the footsteps of his father, Muhoozi, while simultaneously making him the third generation of the Museveni family to enter Uganda’s military establishment.

That is likely to make his next steps in the UPDF a subject of considerable public and political interest.
