UgandaToday: Our Power, Our Planet: How ECOTRUST Is Leading Conservation in Uganda

A Global Call to Action on Earth Day 2026

On Wednesday, April 22, the world marked Earth Day under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” The theme underscores a powerful message: people hold the responsibility—and the ability—to protect the environment. It calls on nations, communities, and individuals to embrace clean energy, safeguard natural ecosystems, and prioritize environmental conservation. Above all, it emphasizes that lasting change begins with collective action.

ECOTRUST’s 27-Year Legacy of Conservation

For more than 27 years, the Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda has been at the forefront of protecting Uganda’s environment. Through innovative conservation financing and nature-based solutions, ECOTRUST has demonstrated that when communities directly benefit from nature, they are more motivated to preserve it.

Landscape Approach Driving Restoration

A cornerstone of ECOTRUST’s work is its landscape approach to conservation, implemented across Uganda’s major ecological zones. These include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, the Rwenzori Mountains, Mount Elgon, Mpologoma, and Agoro-Agu landscapes.

Spanning more than 40 districts—such as Kasese, Lamwo, Masindi, Kiryandongo, Mbale, and Namutumba—these efforts aim to restore over 50,000 hectares of degraded forest. The initiative is revitalizing wildlife habitats, strengthening climate resilience, and improving livelihoods for local communities.

Communities at the Heart of Conservation

What sets ECOTRUST apart is its community-led model. Local farmers and groups are actively engaged in tree planting, wetland restoration, and agroforestry practices on their land.

So far, more than 2,000 farmers have collectively restored over 60 hectares, demonstrating that grassroots participation is key to sustainable environmental management.

Trees for Global Benefits: Linking Farmers to Carbon Markets

Since 2003, ECOTRUST has implemented the Trees for Global Benefits (TGB) programme. This initiative has connected over 40,000 smallholder households to the voluntary carbon market, attracting more than USD 6 million in foreign direct investment.

Through TGB, over 6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide have been removed from the atmosphere. Farmers earn income while contributing to global climate mitigation efforts, reducing pressure on natural forests by providing alternative livelihoods.

Conservation That Pays

At its core, ECOTRUST champions the principle that conservation must improve people’s lives. By focusing on conservation financing, the organization ensures that farmers and communities are financially rewarded for protecting ecosystems.

This integrated model—combining environmental protection, climate action, and income generation—makes conservation both practical and sustainable.

A Model of Hope for the Future

As the world reflects on Earth Day 2026, Uganda’s community-driven conservation model offers a compelling example of what is possible. It reinforces the idea that investing in people—“Our Power”—is essential to safeguarding “Our Planet.”

ECOTRUST’s work goes beyond tree planting. It is shaping a future where environmental sustainability and human prosperity go hand in hand.
