UgandaToday: Running For a King: How the Kabaka Birthday Run Became Uganda’s Biggest Cultural Health Movement
By Uganda Today News Features Desk
Every year, in the days leading up to April 13, a remarkable spectacle unfolds across Buganda Kingdom and far beyond Uganda’s borders. Thousands—sometimes millions—lace up their running shoes in honor of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, celebrating not just his birthday, but a unifying cause that blends culture, health, and identity.
The Kabaka Birthday Run, now in its 13th year, has evolved into Uganda’s largest one-day event—both a cultural festival and a public health campaign of immense significance.
A Royal Tradition Rooted in Purpose
Held annually on the Sunday preceding April 13, the run begins at the historic Lubiri Palace, the Kabaka’s official residence in Mengo. From this symbolic seat of Buganda’s heritage, participants set off in waves, dressed in themed kits that reflect the year’s health campaign. But this is no ordinary marathon.

Each edition of the run is dedicated to a specific public health cause—most notably the fight against HIV/AIDS, sickle cell disease, and more recently, campaigns encouraging healthy lifestyles and preventive healthcare.
By mobilizing masses under the banner of culture, the Kabaka has successfully turned celebration into advocacy.
The Engine Behind the Run: Majestic Brands
Behind the seamless organization of this grand event is Majestic Brands, the commercial and branding arm of the Buganda Kingdom.
Majestic Brands is tasked with conceptualizing, organizing, and executing the Kabaka Birthday Run, ensuring that it maintains its status as a world-class event. From designing the iconic running kits to coordinating logistics across Uganda and the diaspora, the organization plays a pivotal role in translating royal vision into action.
Through strategic partnerships and branding expertise, Majestic Brands has elevated the run into a global cultural product—one that resonates with both tradition and modernity.
Powered by Strong Partnerships
The success and scale of the Kabaka Birthday Run would not be possible without the backing of major sponsors and partners. Over the years, key supporters have included:
- Airtel Uganda (longtime lead sponsor)
- Centenary Bank
- Uganda Breweries Limited
- MTN Uganda
- National Water and Sewerage Corporation
- Betika
These organizations not only provide financial support but also amplify awareness campaigns tied to each year’s theme.
A Global Celebration of Identity
What makes the Kabaka Birthday Run truly unique is its global reach.
While the main event takes place in Kampala, thousands of Baganda and Ugandans in the diaspora participate simultaneously—from London to Boston, Johannesburg to Dubai. Participants run in their neighborhoods, parks, and even within the confines of their homes, sharing photos and videos in solidarity with the Kabaka.

A notable example is Bishop Katumba Tamale, who joined the run from the precincts of his home. His participation underscores the inclusive nature of the event—proving that distance, age, or status are no barriers to honoring the Kabaka.
More Than a Run: A Movement
Over the past decade, the Kabaka Birthday Run has transcended sport to become a movement of unity and awareness.
It bridges generations—youth, elders, religious leaders, and professionals—all rallying behind a shared cause. It also reinforces Buganda’s cultural pride while addressing contemporary societal challenges.
In a country where public health messaging can struggle to reach grassroots communities, the Kabaka’s influence has proven to be a powerful catalyst for change.
