Muhoozi Kainerugaba Mocks Bobi Wine Over ‘Safe Place’ Video, Igniting Online Backlash

This year's election analysts noted that Muhoozi’s direct involvement in elections related processes have blurred the lines between military professionalism and partisan politics, raising concerns about the role of security agencies in Uganda’s political discourse.

UgandaToday: Muhoozi Kainerugaba Mocks Bobi Wine Over ‘Safe Place’ Video, Igniting Online Backlash

Kampala, Uganda

A fresh political storm has erupted on Uganda’s digital political battleground after Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, took a public swipe at opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, over a video message he recorded “from a safe place.”

In a post published on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Muhoozi appeared to ridicule Kyagulanyi’s security concerns, reigniting debate about political tolerance, intimidation, and the shrinking civic space in Uganda.

The Controversial Post

Responding to Bobi Wine’s video message addressed to Ugandans and the international community, Muhoozi wrote:

“Is the safe place your latrine Kabobi? Cause no one is looking for you.”

The remark, posted just hours after Bobi Wine shared his message under the hashtag #FreeUgandaNow, immediately drew sharp reactions from across the political divide.

Bobi Wine’s Message to Uganda and the World

Earlier, Bobi Wine had released a 3-minute video, stating that it was recorded from a “safe place,” citing escalating repression, arbitrary arrests of opposition supporters, and what he described as a worsening human rights situation in the country.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader has, in recent years, repeatedly reported harassment, surveillance, and violent disruption of his political activities—claims that government officials routinely deny.

Online Reactions: Mockery or Intimidation?

Muhoozi’s comment quickly went viral, attracting thousands of reactions, with critics accusing him of trivializing fears faced by opposition figures and abusing his powerful military position to taunt a civilian politician.

Supporters of the First Son, however, framed the post as political banter, arguing that Bobi Wine exaggerates threats to gain international sympathy.

This year’s election analysts noted that Muhoozi’s direct involvement in elections related processes have blurred the lines between military professionalism and partisan politics, raising concerns about the role of security agencies in Uganda’s political discourse.

A Pattern of Provocative Online Engagement

This is not the first time Muhoozi Kainerugaba has courted controversy online. His X account has previously been used to comment on opposition leaders, regional geopolitics, succession politics, and internal security matters—often in blunt and confrontational language.

Critics argue that such statements, especially when directed at opposition figures, risk normalizing political hostility and deepening polarization ahead of critical national moments.

Broader Implications for Uganda’s Political Climate

The exchange underscores Uganda’s deepening political tensions, where social media has become both a tool for mobilization and a weapon for intimidation.

As the country navigates ongoing debates about democracy, security, and freedom of expression, the tone set by senior state actors—particularly those in uniform—continues to attract scrutiny both locally and internationally.
