As the world commemorates Easter—a sacred season of hope, resurrection, and redemption—Ugandans have received a stirring message of peace and resilience from behind the heavily fortified walls of Luzira Upper Prison, where opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajji Obeid Lutale, remain in detention.

In a handwritten Easter letter dated 17th April 2025, Dr. Besigye extends heartfelt gratitude to friends, colleagues, activists, and supporters for their unyielding moral, material, and spiritual support throughout what he calls “the last five months of our incarceration in Makindye Military Detention and Luzira Maximum Security Prison.”

“May you be immensely blessed,” he writes in blue ink, with a tone that reflects humility, strength, and enduring faith.

🕊️ A Son’s Reassurance: Besigye Is Safe, Strong, and Spiritually Uplifted

Following the release of the Easter letter, Uganda Today received a companion message from Adam Ampa Besigye, Dr. Besigye’s son, expressing joy and deep gratitude upon learning that his father and fellow detainee, Hajji Obeid Lutale, are “fine and in high spirits.”

“Their courage is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that faith can inspire,” Adam wrote, drawing parallels with the biblical story of Paul and Silas who found hope and sang hymns in prison.

Quoting 1 Peter 1:3 and Romans 8:28, Adam’s message blended personal reflection with scripture, echoing his father’s spiritual resilience. He called on Ugandans and fellow believers to stand firm in hope, trusting that “true freedom lies within the spirit, determination, and resilience that cannot be confined.”

📜 Inside the Easter Letter: Peace in the Midst of Injustice

In the letter, Dr. Besigye acknowledges that prison—despite its intended punishment—has given him and Hajji Lutale an “opportunity to meditate, reflect, learn and plan spiritual renewal.”

He adds:

“As we celebrate Easter, we are at peace, in spite of the imprisonment, by the grace of the Lord.”

Even as they endure what many call unjust detention, the letter affirms that Easter’s true message—the triumph of light over darkness—remains alive within them.

✊🏽 Resilience of the Spirit: A Legacy of Faith and Freedom

Dr. Besigye’s Easter message is more than a spiritual note—it is a political reminder that the fight for freedom in Uganda cannot be locked away. His son’s echo of that faith reinforces the image of a family and a movement grounded in conviction, principle, and unwavering hope.

As Uganda contemplates the future of justice and democracy, this Easter message from a prison cell might serve as the most powerful sermon yet.
