KAMPALA, UGANDA – In yet another shocking revelation of reckless and dangerous driving behavior, eyewitnesses have reported seeing a Gateway bus registered as UBG 835M traveling from Kabale to Kampala, with a grossly overloaded load of passengers and an undisciplined driver who could not resist taking calls.
According to sources, the bus had several passengers seated in the bus corridor, a clear indication of its excessive load, and a blatant disregard for safety regulations.
What adds to the gravity of this situation is that at the time of the sighting, the driver was busy talking on his phone, oblivious to the hazardous road conditions and his duties as a responsible operator of public transport.
“It was a nightmare,” eyewitness, Jane Akello, recounted. “Passengers were packed like sardines, some were even standing in the corridors, and the driver was taking calls, completely distracted.”
This incident comes in the wake of repeated calls by transport experts and road safety organizations to bus companies to take a more proactive stance in disciplining their drivers, particularly regarding the use of mobile phones while driving.
We urge bus companies, such as Gateway Bus Services, to take immediate action against errant drivers who disregard the safety of passengers and the road rules. The use of mobile phones while driving is a recipe for disaster, and it is high time that transport operators take drastic measures to ensure their drivers adhere to safe and responsible driving practices.
“We urge the public to report any such incidents to our office, and we will work closely with relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law,” a statement from the National Road Safety Board read.
In the meantime, we warn all bus drivers and operators to take heed of this warning and prevail over their staff, particularly drivers, to desist from the habit of taking phone calls while driving.
