KAMPALA, Uganda — The Government of Uganda is set to officially launch the National Cleaning Days Campaign on Saturday, July 25, 2026, in a renewed effort to rally citizens, institutions and local governments to prioritise environmental cleanliness, proper waste management and disease prevention across the country. The initiative has been championed by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who has urged Ugandans to embrace cleanliness as a shared civic responsibility aimed at building healthier and more attractive communities.

The nationwide campaign is expected to mobilise government ministries, district and city authorities, schools, businesses, religious institutions, cultural leaders and community members to participate in organised cleaning exercises on designated national cleaning days.

A National Call for Collective Responsibility

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Prime Minister appealed to all Ugandans to actively participate in keeping their homes, workplaces, markets, schools and public spaces clean, stressing that environmental sanitation is fundamental to protecting public health and improving the country’s image.

The campaign is expected to encourage regular community clean-up exercises, proper garbage disposal, unclogging drainage channels and maintaining hygienic surroundings as part of Uganda’s broader environmental conservation and public health agenda.

Fighting Disease Through Clean Environments

Government officials believe that cleaner communities will significantly reduce the spread of preventable diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhoeal infections and malaria, many of which are linked to poor sanitation and blocked drainage systems.

The initiative also seeks to promote behavioural change by encouraging every household and institution to take responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings rather than relying solely on local authorities.

Local Governments to Lead Community Mobilisation

Districts, cities, municipalities and lower local governments are expected to spearhead implementation by organising periodic community cleaning activities while working closely with village leaders, youth groups, civil society organisations and the private sector.

Officials say sustained public participation will be key to ensuring the National Cleaning Days become a lasting culture rather than a one-off event.

Cleanliness Supports Tourism and National Development

Beyond improving public health, the campaign is expected to enhance Uganda’s urban appearance, protect the environment and strengthen the country’s attractiveness as a tourism and investment destination.

Government believes cleaner towns, trading centres and rural communities contribute to sustainable development while fostering civic pride and responsible citizenship.

As the country prepares for the official launch on Saturday, Ugandans from all walks of life are being encouraged to dedicate time to cleaning their neighbourhoods and to make environmental sanitation part of everyday life.
