UgandaToday: The Bishop Who Roared: James Bukomeko’s Defiant Message to Museveni Over Muhoozi Controversy

A Church Voice Breaks the Silence

At a time when Uganda’s political landscape has been dominated by heated debate over the role of security agencies and the conduct of powerful individuals within government structures, the voice of the Bishop of Mityana Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Dr. James Ssaalongo Bukomeko, has emerged as one of the strongest from the religious fraternity.

Bishop Bukomeko, an Anglican leader known for his pastoral work and public engagement, delivered a message calling upon President Yoweri Museveni to take responsibility and call his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), to order.

His remarks came amid growing public concern over allegations surrounding politically sensitive security incidents, including claims by opposition figures and their supporters regarding arrests, detentions and abductions of citizens. One of the recent cases drawing public attention has been that of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

“A Bishop Who Says He Does Not Fear”

A voice from the pulpit: Bishop Bukomeko calls for accountability amidst Uganda’s political tensions

Unlike leaders who have often chosen cautious language when addressing the government, Bukomeko’s message was framed as a moral and spiritual intervention.

The Bishop reportedly emphasized that speaking truth to power is part of the responsibility of church leaders, insisting that fear should not prevent religious leaders from addressing matters affecting the nation.

His posture has been interpreted by supporters as a reminder of the historic role of the church in advocating for justice, accountability and protection of citizens’ dignity.

A Contrast Within the Anglican Leadership

The bishop’s statement has sparked comparisons with the approach of other senior church leaders, particularly debates around how far religious institutions should go in confronting political authority.

While some critics argue that religious leaders sometimes avoid direct confrontation with the state due to concerns about repercussions, Bukomeko’s supporters say his stance represents a return to the tradition of prophetic voices challenging those in power.

The debate has also revived questions about the relationship between the church and state in Uganda, and whether faith leaders should remain neutral observers or active voices on national issues.

The Man Behind the Mitre

Rt. Rev. Dr. James Bukomeko was elected Bishop of Mityana Diocese in 2019 and later consecrated and enthroned in 2020. Before becoming bishop, he served in different capacities within the Anglican Church, including ministry roles in Namirembe Diocese.

Born in Luweero, Bukomeko has academic training in theology, education and human resource management, including a Master of Divinity degree from Uganda Christian University.

The Bigger Political Question

Beyond the personality of Bishop Bukomeko, his remarks have opened a wider national conversation: whether institutions of faith, law and civil society can continue to speak independently in an environment where political power and security structures remain highly influential.

For many observers, the Mityana Bishop’s intervention represents more than a criticism of an individual — it is a challenge about accountability, leadership and the protection of citizens’ freedoms.
