The vessel was travelling from Kigoma in Tanzania towards Kalemie in the Democratic Republic of the Congo when it sank near the Congolese village of Mapera.

Authorities said approximately 100 people were believed to have been aboard, while 49 people had been rescued as search operations continued for others who may still be missing.

Survivors Rescued As Search Continues

Norris Mulongoyi, the provincial transport minister for Tanganyika Province, said rescue and search operations were continuing.

A survivor told Radio Okapi that passengers were awakened during the night and discovered that the vessel was tilting to one side before the situation rapidly deteriorated.

The exact cause of the disaster had not immediately been established.

Lake Transport Remains A Lifeline

The tragedy highlights the importance of water transport to communities around Lake Tanganyika.

For many people living around the lake, boats provide an essential and relatively affordable means of moving between communities and across national borders.

But safety concerns have repeatedly emerged around passenger vessels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where reports have highlighted problems including overcrowding and inadequate availability of life jackets.

The latest disaster is particularly concerning because it follows other serious maritime incidents in the region.

A Wider Regional Safety Question

The Lake Tanganyika tragedy raises broader questions about enforcement of maritime safety standards on one of Africa’s largest lakes.

Authorities across countries bordering the lake — including Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and Zambia — face the challenge of ensuring that commercial vessels comply with passenger limits, navigation requirements, emergency procedures and life-saving equipment standards.

The tragedy also underlines the importance of coordinated regional search-and-rescue capacity.

Families Await Answers

For families whose relatives were aboard the vessel, the rescue operation is also a race against time.

Authorities and rescue teams continue to face the difficult task of identifying survivors, recovering victims and establishing exactly what happened before the vessel sank.

As the search continues, the disaster has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by millions of Africans who depend on inland waterways for transport, trade and access to essential services.
