A Grim Pattern in Bunyoro: Are LC5 Chairpersons Being Claimed by More Than Chance?
Adding to the unease are accounts from individuals close to the deceased. A relative of the late Kirungi Kadir recounts a disturbing detail: moments after the fatal crash, an unidentified vehicle reportedly appeared at the scene. Its occupant allegedly retrieved a bag from the wrecked vehicle and disappeared without a trace.

Shock and Grief After Banura’s Sudden Death
Bunyoro sub-region is once again engulfed in grief following the tragic death of Hon. Peter Banura, the Kikuube District LC5 Chairperson, who perished in a road accident in Kiziranfumbi. Banura, widely regarded as a humble and dedicated public servant, was at the peak of his leadership—making his sudden demise all the more devastating.
His death adds to a troubling pattern that is increasingly raising eyebrows among leaders and citizens alike.
A Disturbing Pattern Across Time
Banura’s passing is not an isolated tragedy. It follows two eerily similar incidents involving top district leaders in Bunyoro:
- 2005: John Nyakoojo Majara, then LC5 Chairperson of Masindi District, died in a road accident at Mabanda in Matugga.
- March 17, 2023: Kirungi Kadir, LC5 Chairperson of Hoima District, lost his life in a fatal crash at Mataagi village in Kiboga District.
Now, barely three years later, Banura’s death marks the third such loss of a sitting LC5 Chairperson from the same region, under strikingly similar circumstances.
Coincidence or Cause for Concern?
The similarities are difficult to ignore:
- All three were sitting LC5 Chairpersons
- All died in road accidents
- All were actively serving at the peak of their leadership
- The incidents occurred within a similar time frame (March–April period)
While road accidents remain a leading cause of death in Uganda, the clustering of such high-profile fatalities within a specific region and leadership category has sparked concern. Is this a tragic coincidence—or something that warrants deeper scrutiny?

Eyewitness Accounts Raise Questions
Adding to the unease are accounts from individuals close to the deceased. A relative of the late Kirungi Kadir recounts a disturbing detail: moments after the fatal crash, an unidentified vehicle reportedly appeared at the scene. Its occupant allegedly retrieved a bag from the wrecked vehicle and disappeared without a trace.
Similarly, in Banura’s case, reports have surfaced suggesting that a mysterious car arrived shortly after the accident and removed the driver believed to have caused the crash. While these claims remain unverified, they have fueled speculation and public anxiety.

The Need for Transparency and Investigation
Uganda has long grappled with road safety challenges, including reckless driving, poor infrastructure, and inadequate enforcement. However, when patterns emerge involving public officials, the burden shifts towards ensuring transparency, accountability, and thorough investigation.
Authorities must:
- Establish clear, independent investigations into each of these incidents
- Provide public updates to dispel rumors and speculation
- Strengthen road safety enforcement, especially for public officials frequently traveling long distances
Failure to address these concerns risks eroding public trust and allowing speculation to thrive.

Beyond Speculation: Honoring Service and Legacy
As the region mourns Hon. Peter Banura, it is important to celebrate his life of service. Like his predecessors, he represented a generation of local leaders committed to grassroots transformation. Yet their untimely deaths leave behind unanswered questions—and a growing sense of unease in Bunyoro.
Whether coincidence or something more complex, one truth remains: the loss of three district chairpersons under similar circumstances is a matter that deserves careful, factual, and transparent examination.
Conclusion: A Region in Mourning, A Nation Watching
As Bunyoro buries yet another leader, the call for clarity grows louder. In a country striving for stability and good governance, such patterns—real or perceived—cannot be ignored. Ugandans deserve answers. And the families of the fallen deserve closure.
