Kyagulanyi Welcomes Release of Veteran Politician After Detention

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has welcomed the granting of bail to veteran Ugandan politician and former ethics minister Miria Matembe, describing the development as a relief while questioning the circumstances that led to her arrest.

In a statement reacting to Matembe’s release, Kyagulanyi said it was regrettable that a 73-year-old public figure with a long record of service had to endure what he described as an unnecessary ordeal.

“Relieved to learn that Hon. Miria Matembe has been granted bail following her abduction last week,” Kyagulanyi stated, adding that Matembe’s detention raised broader concerns about the treatment of elderly citizens and public voices critical of those in power.

Arrest Reignites Debate on Freedom of Expression

Matembe’s case has triggered renewed debate about the space for dissent in Uganda, particularly regarding whether outspoken criticism of powerful individuals can attract state action.

Kyagulanyi linked Matembe’s troubles to her public criticism of Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of the Defence Forces, arguing that the incident reflected what he termed an abuse of state authority against a vulnerable citizen.

The remarks have added fuel to an already heated national conversation over the relationship between military power, political expression, and accountability.

Controversial Charge Raises Questions

Matembe was reportedly charged with promoting sectarianism — a charge that has drawn criticism from opposition figures and some civil society voices, who argue that the law should not be used to suppress legitimate criticism.

Kyagulanyi questioned what he described as an apparent contradiction, accusing the government of using legal instruments against individuals who challenge issues of governance and social justice.

The controversy has revived longstanding debates around Uganda’s political environment, where critics have often raised concerns about the handling of opposition voices, activists, and dissenting opinions.

A Legacy of Public Service at the Centre of Debate

Beyond the immediate legal battle, Matembe’s detention has placed renewed attention on her decades-long public career.

A prominent advocate for women’s rights, integrity in leadership, and constitutional governance, Matembe has remained an influential figure in Uganda’s political history.

Her supporters argue that her long record of service should have informed the manner in which authorities handled the matter.

Opposition Calls for Unity Against Political Repression

Kyagulanyi concluded his message by calling for collective action, arguing that Ugandans must unite in seeking solutions to what he described as challenges of governance and human rights.

The statement has further intensified political discussions ahead of Uganda’s broader electoral and governance debates, with opposition leaders continuing to demand greater protection for civil liberties and freedom of expression.
