Sudden Tragedy in Lira City
LIRA CITY — The football fraternity in Lira City is mourning the sudden death of Opio Emma, widely known among friends, local supporters and former colleagues as Opio Emma Iraq or Opio Emma JP, a devoted football enthusiast whose passion for the game defined much of his public life.
Opio reportedly collapsed while watching an Arsenal match at a local football viewing centre in Lira City. Witnesses said the atmosphere inside the football hall had been charged with emotion as supporters followed the game before the incident that has since left fellow fans in shock.
A Passion for Arsenal and Uganda Cranes
His passing has reverberated through Lira’s vibrant football community, where he was widely recognised for his unwavering devotion to Arsenal F.C. and the Uganda Cranes.
Friends and fellow supporters described him as a man whose love for football went beyond casual fandom, becoming part of his identity and daily life. His energy during match days, his spirited reactions and his deep emotional investment in the fortunes of his beloved teams made him a familiar and cherished figure among local fans.
Early Football Promise
Those who knew him recall that Opio’s relationship with the game stretched back decades. In 1998, he was regarded as one of the promising footballers in the PTS Masindi team, where he earned admiration for his discipline, commitment and ability on the pitch.
His football journey later intersected with public service, and he became known among officers of the 12th intake of the police force.
Life’s Turning Point
However, his career in the police ended after his dismissal under circumstances described by acquaintances as disgraceful. The setback marked a turning point in his life.
He later travelled to Iraq, a chapter that would eventually earn him the nickname “Iraq” among peers and friends.
Return to Community Life
Upon his return to Uganda, Opio rebuilt his life through business and community engagement. He ventured into private enterprise and became involved in managing a local football cinema in Lira City, where he remained closely connected to the sport that had shaped much of his personal journey.

For many local supporters, the football hall was not merely a place to watch matches. It was a gathering point where Opio’s enthusiasm, humour and infectious love for football became part of the social fabric of the city.
Tributes From Fellow Supporters
His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from supporters across the city.
One local Arsenal fan summed up the mood in a brief tribute: “Rest in peace, Opio. Too much of anything is dangerous, but Opio showed us how much joy football brings.”
Friends say his passing is also a reminder of the emotional power of sport. Football remains one of Uganda’s most cherished social experiences, bringing together communities, families and neighbourhoods in moments of celebration, tension and shared identity.
A Gathering to Celebrate His Life
Arsenal supporters in Lira and across Uganda are now organising a tribute gathering in his honour. The event will provide an opportunity for fellow fans, friends and members of the wider community to celebrate his life, share memories and support one another during this difficult time.
For many in Lira, Opio Emma will be remembered not simply as a supporter of Arsenal, but as a man whose energy, devotion and love for football left a lasting imprint on the city’s sporting community.
