UN General Assembly Faces Test Of Global Cooperation
NEW YORK — Nearly 130 world leaders are gathering in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly, with armed conflicts, artificial intelligence, international security and the future of multilateral cooperation expected to dominate discussions.
The high-level week runs from September 18 to 28, with the General Debate scheduled to begin on September 22.
The gathering comes at a particularly difficult moment for international diplomacy, with conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine continuing to generate humanitarian, economic and geopolitical consequences.

The Middle East is expected to receive considerable attention as fighting involving Iran and Israel and wider regional tensions continue to affect security and international trade.
The Bab el-Mandeb shipping route is another concern. Continuing instability around Yemen and the Red Sea has raised fears about disruptions to one of the world’s important maritime corridors.
The war in Ukraine will also feature prominently in diplomatic discussions, with Russian and Ukrainian officials expected to present sharply different positions.
The UN has continued to face pressure to demonstrate that multilateral diplomacy can help resolve or contain major international crises.
Artificial Intelligence Becomes A Global Diplomatic Issue
Artificial intelligence is emerging as another major issue at this year’s General Assembly.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for international cooperation and common safeguards around AI, warning that countries developing advanced systems need mechanisms capable of managing associated risks.
The debate reflects the growing influence of AI on economies, employment, security, education and information systems.
The International Labour Organization is also placing the future of work, platform employment, workers’ financial health and social justice among its priorities during the General Assembly.
Questions About The Future Of The United Nations
The gathering also comes as the United Nations faces financial and political pressure.
The United States has reduced some contributions and withdrawn from a number of UN-related bodies, while debates continue over the organisation’s effectiveness and structure.
The United States nevertheless made a $725 million payment towards its regular UN budget this week, according to Reuters, although Washington still has outstanding obligations.
Meanwhile, Guterres is approaching the end of his second term as Secretary-General, which expires at the end of 2026. The process of choosing his successor is therefore another issue attracting diplomatic attention.
Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced on September 20 that she was withdrawing from the contest. Reuters reported that seven candidates remained after her withdrawal.
Africa’s Voice At The Global Table
African countries will also use the General Assembly to raise issues ranging from development finance and climate change to trade, technology, peace and security.
Kenyan President William Ruto arrived in New York on September 20, saying Kenya’s priorities include investment, trade, technology and strengthening Africa’s participation in the digital and AI economy.
For developing countries, the General Assembly remains an important platform through which national and regional concerns can be placed before the wider international community.
