Balaam-Backed Exhumation Marks Turning Point in Long-Running Family Dispute

KAMPALA — A decades-old paternity dispute surrounding the estate of legendary Kadongo Kamu musician Prince Paul Job Kafeero has entered what many observers describe as its most decisive phase following the exhumation of the late singer’s remains for DNA sampling.

The exercise, conducted under a court order on Monday, June 1, was aimed at obtaining forensic samples that will help determine the biological relationship between the late musician and more than 20 individuals who have over the years claimed to be his children. The samples will be analyzed by the Government Analytical Laboratory and the Uganda Police Forensic Laboratory.

The development comes after years of family disagreements, legal battles, and public debate over the true beneficiaries of Kafeero’s estate.

Balaam Says Truth Is Finally Within Reach

Outgoing State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, announced the breakthrough, expressing optimism that science would finally settle a matter that has remained unresolved for more than 20 years.

“As I prepare to hand over the Youth and Children Affairs docket soon, I wish to inform the public that the long-standing paternity dispute involving over 20 young people allegedly fathered by my friend, the late Prince Paul Kafeero, will soon be resolved,” Balaam said in a public statement.

He described the exhumation as a major step toward establishing the truth and restoring harmony within the family.

Forensic Experts Lead Sensitive Exercise

According to information released after the exercise, the exhumation and collection of DNA samples were conducted by a team of pathologists led by Assistant Inspector General of Police Dr. Moses Byaruhanga in accordance with established forensic procedures and court directives.

The collected samples will be subjected to scientific analysis to establish whether the claimants are biologically related to the late singer.

Government Chief Pathologist Dr. Byaruhanga defended the process, noting that the tests are intended to eliminate speculation and provide definitive answers to a matter that has generated public interest and family tension for years.

A Legacy Overshadowed by Questions of Lineage

Since Kafeero’s death in 2007, questions regarding his biological children and rightful heirs have repeatedly surfaced, creating divisions among family members and sparking legal contests over inheritance rights.

Several previous attempts to settle the dispute reportedly failed to achieve consensus, with some claimants questioning earlier DNA findings and others calling for a more conclusive forensic process.

The latest DNA exercise is therefore being viewed as the strongest opportunity yet to provide a scientifically verifiable conclusion.

Family Members Welcome Progress

Following the exhumation, some family representatives publicly expressed gratitude to Balaam for facilitating the process and helping move the matter toward resolution.

In a message of appreciation, family members commended the minister’s commitment to justice, truth, and reconciliation, saying the development offers hope for closure after more than two decades of uncertainty.

They also expressed confidence in the work of the Government Analytical Laboratory and Uganda Police forensic experts, whose findings are expected to determine the outcome of the long-running dispute.

Remembering a Kadongo Kamu Icon

Prince Paul Job Kafeero remains one of Uganda’s most celebrated Kadongo Kamu musicians. His music, known for addressing social realities, family life, hardship, faith, and perseverance, continues to resonate with audiences nearly two decades after his passing.

Ironically, a man whose songs often reflected life’s struggles and unanswered questions has left behind a family story that is now awaiting answers from modern science.

As the country waits for the forensic findings, many hope the results will finally bring closure to one of Uganda’s most talked-about family disputes and allow Kafeero’s legacy to be remembered more for his music than for controversy.
