UgandaToday: Daylight Robbery at Fuel Station Raises Security Concerns After Street Vendor Evictions
A robbery incident captured on CCTV has intensified concerns about rising urban crime following the recent eviction of street vendors from the streets of Kampala and its surrounding suburbs.
The incident occurred in the afternoon hours of Monday, March 9, 2026, at the Stabex Petrol Station Namakonkome Branch along Bombo Road, after Mattuga, next to Kigoogwa Town.
CCTV Footage Reveals Tense Moments
CCTV footage from the station’s safe room shows a female staff member hurriedly securing the reinforced door while suspicious individuals appear outside attempting to gain access. The footage suggests that the attackers had already made their way into parts of the fuel station premises before attempting to breach the safe room where cash and sensitive documents are kept.
Inside the room, a desk scattered with operational materials—including receipts, a calculator, and other office supplies—can be seen as the attendant moves quickly to secure the door. The video indicates a tense standoff moment as the suspects try to force entry while staff inside remain locked in for safety.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, although the extent of financial loss, if any, had not yet been confirmed by the time of reporting.
Growing Security Fears in Kampala Suburbs
The incident comes amid growing public debate about security following the recent removal of street vendors from key streets and trading points in Kampala. Some community members argue that the absence of the informal traders—who previously acted as constant “eyes on the street”—has inadvertently reduced natural surveillance in busy areas.
Local residents and motorists using Bombo Road say daylight robberies were previously rare in the corridor stretching from Mattuga to Kigoogwa.
“Before, there were always many people around the roadside kiosks and stalls. Now some places become quiet during certain hours, which criminals may exploit,” said one boda boda rider operating near Kigoogwa trading centre.
Calls for Enhanced Security
Security analysts are now urging fuel stations, supermarkets, and other businesses operating along major highways leading out of Kampala to strengthen surveillance systems, reinforce safe rooms, and increase coordination with local police patrols.
Fuel stations are particularly vulnerable because they handle significant cash transactions and operate late hours.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement on the Namakonkome incident, but police are expected to review the CCTV footage to identify the suspects.
A Warning to Businesses
The attempted robbery serves as a reminder to businesses to maintain strict security protocols even during daytime hours. Experts recommend controlled access points, alarm systems, and rapid communication channels with nearby police units.
As Kampala continues to reorganize its urban spaces, residents and business operators alike are calling for balanced policies that maintain order while ensuring that security and community vigilance are not compromised. 🚨🏙️
