Bugembe, Jinja District — Mr. Magan Patel, the founder and director of Nile Agro Group of Companies, has been arrested over the alleged encroachment on a protected wetland in Bugembe, following claims that soil was illegally poured into the area to reclaim land for development.

Environmental enforcement officers, working alongside local authorities, reportedly arrested Mr. Patel after investigations established that sections of the wetland had been degraded through unauthorized back-filling with murram soil. Wetlands in Uganda are protected under national environmental laws due to their critical role in flood control, water purification, and biodiversity conservation.

According to officials familiar with the operation, the activity was carried out without approval from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), a requirement for any development in or near gazetted wetlands. The pouring of soil is said to have significantly altered the natural state of the wetland, raising concerns about increased flooding risks and environmental degradation in the Bugembe area.

Local residents had earlier raised alarm over heavy trucks dumping soil in the wetland, prompting inspections by environmental authorities. “This wetland is part of a natural drainage system. Any interference affects the entire community,” said one resident, who welcomed the enforcement action.

Mr. Patel was taken into custody to assist with investigations and is expected to be charged in accordance with the National Environment Act, which prescribes penalties including fines, restoration orders, or imprisonment for wetland encroachment and degradation.

Authorities reiterated that no individual or corporate entity is above the law when it comes to environmental protection. “Economic investment must go hand in hand with environmental compliance,” an official said, adding that government agencies will continue to crack down on illegal wetland activities countrywide.

The arrest comes amid renewed government efforts to reclaim and protect wetlands, which have been steadily depleted due to industrial expansion, real estate development, and infrastructure projects.

By press time, Nile Agro Group had not issued an official statement regarding the arrest or the alleged wetland encroachment.
