Uganda Today“Give Me My Passport Before It’s Too Late” — Eron Kiiza Calls Out Judiciary Over Delayed Access to Medical Treatment Abroad

By Uganda Today Reporter

KAMPALA — Human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza has sounded a desperate alarm over what he calls a politically motivated delay by the High Court of Uganda (Criminal Division) to release his passport, a situation he says is endangering his health and infringing on his basic rights.

In a late-night cry posted on social media, Kiiza wrote:

“I am failing to sleep because the High Court of Uganda (Criminal Division) is holding onto my passport delaying my overseas rest and medical attention. My health cannot wait but the politics behind the delay to give me my passport can wait.”

Justice Delayed, Health Denied

Eron Kiiza, who has long been known for taking on politically sensitive cases—including the defense of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and activist Lutale before a military tribunal—believes his legal activism is the reason behind the judiciary’s continued hold on his travel document.

“I did not commit a crime to represent @kizzabesigye1 & Lutale before a Kangaroo military tribunal. Did I?” he rhetorically asked.

Sources close to the lawyer indicate that Kiiza has been battling deteriorating health and was scheduled to travel overseas for rest and urgent medical care. The indefinite withholding of his passport, according to Kiiza, not only compromises his well-being but also sends a chilling message to other human rights defenders in Uganda.

Eron Kiiza was incarcerated by the outlawed Court Martial during the het of his legal representation of Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale

A Call for Civil Resistance

Frustrated by the delay, the outspoken lawyer has now threatened to take his battle to the streets.

“I will soon lead a street demonstration of 100 Ugandans to ask the Criminal Division of the High Court of @JudiciaryUG to give me my passport,” he announced.

In a direct appeal to the public, he added:

“Will you join me in ensuring that I fight for my life and passport before it is too late?”

Judiciary Under Spotlight

Kiiza’s ordeal raises new questions about the independence of Uganda’s judiciary and the rights of citizens to access critical medical care without political interference. It also comes at a time when several human rights lawyers and political activists in Uganda are reporting increasing legal harassment, surveillance, and travel restrictions.

Civil society actors have urged the judiciary to act impartially and expediently in such matters, warning that continued delays and selective justice risk eroding public trust in legal institutions.

A Pattern of Punishment?

Kiiza has previously been vocal against injustices, land grabs, illegal detentions, and environmental degradation. His legal representation of government critics and fearless advocacy has made him both a champion to many and a target of state structures.

If the judiciary fails to respond to his demand, Kiiza’s proposed street action could mark yet another flashpoint in the ongoing struggle for rule of law and freedom of movement in Uganda.

Uganda Today will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on this developing story.
