Rt. Hon Robinah Nabbanja, Uganda’s Prime Minister, stands as a symbol of resilience, dedication, and transformative leadership. From her humble beginnings in Kakumiro District to becoming the head of government business, her journey inspires countless Ugandans.

Early Life and Education

Born on December 17, 1969, in Kamusenene village, Nkooko Sub-County, Mubende District (now Kakumiro), Robinah Nabbanja is the seventh of eleven siblings. Her father, John Kayiira, a farmer and tailor, and her mother, Nzeremeri Nakato, instilled values of hard work and perseverance in their children. Despite losing her father while in primary school, Nabbanja excelled academically, securing admission to Trinity College Nabbingo after achieving a first grade in her Primary Leaving Examinations.

However, financial constraints led her mother to choose a more affordable school closer to home. Nabbanja walked miles barefoot to attend classes until her uncle, recognizing her potential, bought her shoes and transferred her to St. Edward’s Secondary School Bukuumi. Despite facing financial hardships, she supported her education by working on school farms and trading farm produce.

She later earned a Diploma in Democracy and Development Studies from Uganda Martyrs University and a Master of Arts in Development Studies. Nabbanja also holds certificates in policy formulation, public administration, and leadership from esteemed institutions like Uganda Management Institute (UMI) and the National Leadership Institute, Kyankwanzi.

Career and Political Journey

Robinah Nabbanja began her career as a teacher at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School in Kakumiro before transitioning into public service. Her leadership journey took off when she served as a Sub-County Chief in Kibaale District. She later became a district councilor, advocating for health, gender, and community services.

Between 2001 and 2010, Nabbanja served as a Resident District Commissioner in Pallisa, Busia, and Budaka. Her entry into parliamentary politics came in 2011 when she was elected as the Woman Representative for Kibaale District. When Kakumiro District was carved out in 2016, she transitioned to represent its women’s constituency.

In 2019, Nabbanja was appointed State Minister of Health for General Duties, gaining recognition for her hands-on approach during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her decision to allocate COVID-19 relief funds to buy motorcycles for Kakumiro’s immunization program showcased her commitment to grassroots development.

In June 2021, President Yoweri Museveni appointed Nabbanja as Uganda’s Prime Minister, making her the first woman to hold this position. Her tenure has been marked by a strong focus on service delivery, community empowerment, and fighting corruption.

Nabbanja is celebrated for her dedication to improving her community. As an MP, she facilitated the construction of schools and health centers, uplifting Kakumiro District. Her political peers describe her as resilient, hardworking, and a master political mobilizer.

Family and Personal Life

Nabbanja, in 1990 got married to Hassan Musafiri,  a former local government leader and businessman. Their partnership has been a cornerstone of her success, with Musafiri providing financial and moral support throughout her career. The couple has two daughters and continues to inspire a balance of family values and public service.
