Uganda Today: Uganda Law Society Condemns Brutal Assault at Lira Nursing School as Director Faces Legal Heat
Lira, Uganda – July 28, 2025 — A disturbing case of violence involving the Director of King James Comprehensive School of Nursing and Midwifery in Lira City has sparked widespread outrage after a viral video surfaced showing the brutal assault of a young man who had gone to visit his girlfriend at the institution.
The suspect, identified as Mr. James Odongo, was caught on camera physically assaulting the male visitor in the school compound. Eyewitnesses say the victim was a boyfriend to one of the students, who herself was not spared the violence. In the video that has since gone viral, Mr. Odongo is seen kicking and slapping the female student under the jaw, prompting sharp condemnation from human rights observers and the legal fraternity.
Sources close to the incident allege that the Director harboured personal feelings for the female student, suggesting a potential motive rooted in jealousy. “This was not discipline—it was personal. It was barbaric,” remarked a student who requested anonymity.
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has since issued a strongly worded statement confirming that the incident took place in February 2025, and that attempts to resolve the matter privately had failed. The ULS described the violence as “disturbing” and a “gross violation of human rights.”

“A police case has been opened at the Lira Regional CID office, which is considering the relevant charges against Mr. Odongo,” the ULS Vice President, Asiimwe Anthony, confirmed in a press statement released on July 28. “We urge all parties and the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to proceed without interference.”
Legal analysts say the viral nature of the video will likely accelerate prosecution, with public pressure mounting for justice to prevail. Civil society organizations have also called on the Ministry of Education and Sports to urgently review the administrative structure of the school and suspend Mr. Odongo pending the conclusion of investigations.
The incident has also raised questions about the safety of students—particularly female students—within privately managed institutions. “We are dealing with a pattern of impunity that must be broken,” noted a human rights lawyer familiar with the case.

The video footage, captured on a mobile phone, continues to draw sharp reactions on social media, with many demanding an overhaul of the school’s leadership and psychological support for the victims.
Uganda Today will continue to follow the story as investigations unfold.
