KAMPALA — Uganda’s minerals sector has registered a significant milestone following the official opening of Euro Gold Refinery (U) SMC Ltd, one of only three licensed gold refineries in the country. The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, alongside the Minister of State for Mineral Development, Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro.

The launch of the Kampala-based facility, held on Tuesday, marks a key step in Uganda’s agenda for mineral beneficiation, job creation, and formalization of gold trade.

“Today, together with Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, we officially opened Euro Gold Refinery (U) SMC Ltd in Kampala,” Hon. Nankabirwa posted on X (formerly Twitter). “This milestone strengthens our minerals sector through value addition, job creation, formalized trade and increased revenue.”

Located in the outskirts of Kampala Kamwokya and owned by Ugandans, Euro Gold Refinery (U) SMC Ltd is expected to play a central role in refining gold extracted from across Uganda and the East African region, in line with government efforts to transform Uganda from a mere exporter of raw minerals to a regional hub for value-added products.

The new refinery is licensed under Uganda’s Mining and Minerals Act, and its operations will be closely regulated to ensure transparency, environmental compliance, and adherence to international gold traceability standards.

Driving Industrialization Through Minerals

The inauguration of Euro Gold Refinery comes at a time when Uganda is aggressively pushing forward with its Mineral Value Addition Strategy, which is intended to support the country’s industrialization, reduce illicit trade, and increase domestic revenue mobilization.

Hon. Nyamutoro, in her remarks at the launch, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to empowering local participation in the mining value chain.

“This refinery is more than just infrastructure; it’s a statement of intent to add value at home, to employ Ugandans, and to ensure that Uganda’s gold wealth benefits its people,” she said.

The refinery’s opening is also expected to promote responsible sourcing and enhance Uganda’s reputation on the global mineral market, positioning it as a trusted supplier of refined precious metals.

A Growing Network of Licensed Refineries

Euro Gold Refinery now joins a select group of licensed gold refining companies operating under strict compliance frameworks. With only three currently recognized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, this addition marks a critical step in meeting international standards and improving traceability across the sector.

The launch event was attended by officials from the Uganda Investment Authority, the Uganda Revenue Authority, and representatives of private sector associations engaged in mineral trade and processing.

As Uganda continues to refine its minerals policy and invest in infrastructure, the opening of the Euro Gold Refinery is a signal of investor confidence in the country’s resource governance framework and a crucial pillar in the country’s journey toward a diversified, self-sustaining economy.
