Sunday Night Breakthrough Signals End of Prolonged Deployment

The long-running security siege at the residence of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu in Magere, Wakiso District, began to ease on Sunday night, culminating in the full withdrawal of both police and military personnel by Tuesday morning.

According to emerging reports and visuals captured in circulating footage, security operatives who had maintained a heavy presence around the property for weeks began vacating the area in phases, marking a dramatic shift in the state’s posture toward the opposition leader’s home.

Gradual Withdrawal Observed Through the Night

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the first signs of de-escalation were visible Sunday night, when security trucks and personnel started pulling back from key positions around the residence.

The once heavily guarded Magere residence returned to normalcy after full security withdrawal.

By Monday, the deployment had significantly reduced, with fewer roadblocks and diminished troop visibility. Residents reported increased movement in and out of the area, a stark contrast to the previously restricted access.

By early Tuesday morning, the withdrawal was complete, with no visible presence of either police or army personnel around the premises.

A Residence No Longer Under Guard

A visit to the Magere home confirmed that the once heavily guarded compound had returned to normalcy. For weeks, the residence had effectively been turned into a restricted zone, with tight surveillance and limited civilian access.

Local residents confirmed that the final convoy of security vehicles departed in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving the area fully accessible for the first time since the deployment began.

Security forces had maintained a tight siege around the Magere home for nearly two months.

Background to the Siege

The security deployment, which lasted approximately two months, followed heightened political tensions in the aftermath of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

During this period, Kyagulanyi—leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP)—remained a central figure in opposition politics, with authorities maintaining that the deployment was for “security purposes.” However, critics consistently described it as a form of political restriction.

Unanswered Questions Over Sudden Exit

Despite the complete withdrawal, authorities have yet to provide a detailed official explanation for the timing and manner of the pullout.

Political observers suggest the move could be linked to ongoing developments within the opposition or broader state calculations, though no formal confirmation has been issued.

Meanwhile, institutions such as the Uganda Law Society have already signaled intentions to pursue accountability over the prolonged siege, even after its lifting.

Political and Public Reactions

The lifting of the siege has sparked mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Supporters of Kyagulanyi have welcomed the development as long overdue, while analysts caution that the underlying tensions that led to the deployment remain unresolved.

As Uganda navigates its post-election landscape, the events in Magere continue to underscore the fragile balance between state security actions and political freedoms.
