UgandaToday: Shamim Nambassa Rallies Ugandans as NUP Intensifies Fundraising Drive After IPOD Funding Denial

Kampala – November 19, 2025:
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has launched an intensified nationwide fundraising drive following the party’s exclusion from receiving financial support under the newly amended Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) funding framework. The move has prompted several senior party leaders, including  Kawempe South LC5 Woman Councillor aspirant Dr. Shamim Nambassa, to rally Ugandans for financial solidarity as the opposition party seeks to fortify its push for political change ahead of the 2025/2026 general elections.

In a passionate public appeal shared on November 18, Dr. Nambassa called upon citizens to contribute whatever they can toward what she described as the “struggle for a new Uganda.”

“Dear Ugandans, I’m reaching out to kindly request for your financial support towards the struggle for a new Uganda. Please contribute anything you can, it adds a lot,” she wrote, urging support for NUP’s grassroots-driven campaign.

The fundraising drive is now prominently featured on NUP’s official communication channels, providing multiple mobile money avenues for supporters who wish to contribute. According to the party, funds collected will support voter mobilization, campaign logistics, and the broader mission of building what they term “a people-powered government.”

With IPOD funding no longer accessible to NUP under the revised legislation, the party argues that public contributions remain the only viable lifeline for opposition politics in the country. Political analysts have noted that the amendment has placed additional financial strain on opposition leading political party, NUP which should have got the second largest chunk after NRM, finds itself under a hanging financial position equivalent to a hanging thread. Other opposition political  parties led by DP’s Norbert Mao, who doubles as minister of Justice, are gagging up against NUP simply because the chunk that would have been apportioned for NUP, is shared among the only parties that subscribe to IPOD thus beefing up their share.

Dr. Nambassa’s renewed activism—reflected both in her mobilisation efforts and her role as LC5 Woman Councillor aspirant—comes at a time when NUP is seeking to consolidate its political base and strengthen its national structures ahead of the polls. Her appeal has since garnered significant online engagement, with supporters citing determination to sustain the push for transformative leadership.

The party, headquartered in Makerere–Kavule, says every contribution brings Uganda “one step closer to a future where leadership is accountable, transparent, and people-centered.”

As the election season intensifies, NUP’s leaders remain optimistic that the spirit of collective sacrifice will offset the funding gap created by the IPOD legislation.
