UgandaToday: Police Officers Who Guarded Bobi Wine Campaigns Reportedly Arrested, Says Kyagulanyi
By Uganda Today Reporter
Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has raised fresh concerns about the alleged arrest and interrogation of police officers who were previously attached to his presidential campaigns, saying they are being targeted for carrying out their duties professionally.
In a statement shared with supporters, Kyagulanyi—popularly known as Bobi Wine—said that security officers assigned to his campaign teams during the heated 2021 presidential elections were subjected to violence and intimidation during the election period and afterwards.
According to Kyagulanyi, several officers including their commander, identified as Afande Kato, were arrested following the election and detained for a prolonged period.
“The police officers who were attached to our campaign were attacked violently and subjected to all manner of brutality,” Kyagulanyi stated.
He added that after the elections, the officers were reportedly interrogated by security agencies over various issues related to his campaign operations.
“They were questioned about our sources of funding, who I was meeting, what our plans were, and why they always sought to protect us from violent attacks by other sections of the police and military,” he said.
Kyagulanyi further alleged that a similar pattern has resurfaced ahead of the next electoral cycle. According to him, officers recently attached to his political activities in the run-up to the 2026 general elections have also reportedly been arrested and are currently being interrogated.
The former presidential candidate said the officers were being unfairly targeted simply for performing their professional responsibilities.
“These officers are usually targeted for doing their job with professionalism and patriotism,” he said.
Kyagulanyi called on the public and political actors to stand in solidarity with the affected officers and advocate for their release.
“May we all stand in solidarity with them, and work for their freedom,” he urged, adding the hashtag #FreeUgandaNow to his message.
Kyagulanyi, who leads the opposition political party National Unity Platform, contested against incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the 2021 Ugandan general election, an election that was marked by widespread reports of violence, arrests of opposition supporters, and heightened security deployments.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the alleged arrests of the police officers mentioned by Kyagulanyi.
Political observers say the claims, if confirmed, could reignite debate about the treatment of security personnel assigned to opposition candidates during election periods, as the country gradually moves toward the next electoral cycle.
