The World Inter-University Games, a biennial event that debuted in 1973 in Torino, Italy, brings together university athletes from across the globe to compete in various disciplines. Uganda has been participating actively, especially from the early 2000s, consistently returning home with commendable medals in various events.

In a remarkable gesture of corporate goodwill and patriotic commitment, the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) has offered full travel and medical insurance coverage to the Ugandan university team set to represent the country at the 2025 World Inter-University Games in Germany, scheduled for 17th to 28th July.

NIC has stood firm to support these games since 2016, the only lapse occurred during the COVID-19 world standstill.

The Ugandan contingent, proudly christened “University Sports Uganda”, comprises 48 athletes and officials drawn from 10 universities across the country. NIC’s insurance sponsorship, valued at $14,750, was officially handed over to Mr. Patrick Bernard Egwelo, President of the Uganda National Council of Sports (NCS), at a colorful ceremony held at Lugogo Cricket Oval Stadium in Kampala.

A Legacy of Support Since 2016

While handing over the cheque, Mr. Elias Edu, Managing Director of NIC, reiterated the corporation’s core values of integrity, innovation, and national development. He emphasized NIC’s unwavering support for university sports, stating,

“Since 2016, NIC has stood with the Ugandan university sports movement because we believe in the transformative power of youth, sportsmanship, and national pride. This insurance package reflects our commitment to safeguarding the health and welfare of our athletes as they fly Uganda’s flag abroad.”

Also present at the ceremony were Miss Joseline Uchanda, NIC’s Head of Sports Relations, and Mr. Paul Mark Kayondo, Head of the Ugandan athletes’ delegation to Germany.

Uganda’s Sporting Diplomacy and Soft Power

In his remarks while flagging off the athletes, Mr. Egwelo urged the team to carry themselves with honor, discipline, and cultural awareness throughout the games.

“These games are not just about medals. They are an international forum for showcasing Uganda’s cultural richness, sportsmanship, and tourism potential. Sports tourism is now a national priority and enjoys direct funding. Let us use this platform wisely,” he said.

The Games: A Tradition of International University Competition

  2. Football (Men and Women)

  3. Basketball (Men and Women)

  4. Volleyball (Men and Women)

  5. Table Tennis

  6. Chess

  7. Swimming

  8. Badminton

  9. Taekwondo

  10. Rugby 7s

  11. Netball (Women)

Since 2003, Uganda has steadily climbed the medal charts in these games. Notable achievements include:

  • 2005 (Belgium): 3 Bronze in athletics (100m, 1500m) and Netball

  • 2009 (Turkey): Silver in women’s football and Bronze in men’s volleyball

  • 2013 (Czech Republic): Gold in men’s 800m, Silver in chess

  • 2017 (Portugal): Silver in women’s netball, Bronze in men’s rugby 7s

  • 2019 (China): Gold in women’s 400m, Bronze in men’s 4×100 relay

  • 2023 (Brazil): Bronze in women’s basketball and Silver in table tennis doubles

A Strong Step Toward Global Recognition

Uganda’s participation under the “University Spots Uganda” banner reflects both youthful energy and national pride. With the generous backing of NIC and other institutional support, the team is expected to compete with vigor and purpose, representing the country with excellence.

As the countdown to Germany begins, all eyes are on the Ugandan flag-bearers to bring back not just medals, but friendships, international exposure, and enduring goodwill for Uganda on the global sports map.
