Kyagulanyi Castigates Brigadier Nalweyiso Over Remarks on Opposition Leadership
“It is intriguing that someone who followed a 36-year-old into war, in a bid to overthrow a legitimate government, is now castigating educated people for supporting a 44-year-old who has never shed the blood of Ugandans,” Kyagulanyi remarked. “Is it about age, or is it about something else?”

Uganda Today edition: Kyagulanyi Castigates Brigadier Nalweyiso Over Remarks on Opposition Leadership
KAMPALA – In a strongly worded statement, National Unity Platform (NUP) President Kyagulanyi Robert Sentamu has criticized Brigadier Proscovia Nalweyiso over her disparaging remarks against him and other educated individuals supporting his political movement. Nalweyiso, a long-serving military officer and senior presidential advisor, recently questioned the rationale behind educated Ugandans rallying behind Kyagulanyi, whom she referred to dismissively as a “boy.”
The Paradox of Nalweyiso’s Criticism
Kyagulanyi highlighted the irony in Nalweyiso’s remarks, pointing out that in 1980, President Yoweri Museveni, then a 36-year-old man, led an armed rebellion against the democratically elected government of Milton Obote. Nalweyiso and other educated individuals joined Museveni in the Luwero bush war—a conflict that claimed an estimated 50,000 lives.
He further stated, “You are who you are because of the blood of Ugandans that was shed for you to sit in that place where you are. Little did the people who lost their lives know that after 40 years in power, you would utter these words. What you speak now is exactly what Obote said about Museveni—accusing him of misleading the youth. Has anything changed? No. Time speaks volumes.”
Prayers for Political Prisoners Amid Heavy Security Deployment
Despite heavy security presence and intimidation, NUP successfully held prayers at its headquarters for political prisoners and missing comrades. The event saw the attendance of leaders from various opposition formations, including Dr. Kizza Besigye’s wife, Hon. Winnie Byanyima, and his lead lawyer, Hon. Martha Karua.
Beyond being a moment of spiritual solidarity, the gathering underscored the growing unity among Ugandans demanding change. “Uganda belongs to all of us,” Kyagulanyi emphasized. “The presence of comrades from different political backgrounds today is proof that we share a common dream—a new Uganda where justice and freedom reign.”
The Continued Detention of Besigye and Museveni’s Tightening Grip
The prayers coincided with increasing frustration over the continued illegal detention of Dr. Besigye, human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza, Bobi Young, Chairman Nyanzi, and Yasin Ssekitoleko. Despite the Supreme Court ruling on January 31, 2025, which nullified all court martial trials—including the one under which Besigye was remanded—Justice Douglas Singiza deferred his ruling on Besigye’s release to February 25, 2025, further delaying justice.
Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS and wife to Besigye, condemned the ruling. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” she declared at the NUP headquarters. “This regime continues to toy with the lives of its opponents while ignoring the Supreme Court’s verdict. If a ruling by the highest court in the land can be ignored, then no Ugandan is safe.”
Muhoozi’s Tweets and Government Defiance
The government’s blatant disregard for the Supreme Court ruling was further exemplified by tweets from First Son and Presidential Advisor Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Following the refusal to release Besigye, Muhoozi tweeted:
“If Besigye thinks he can destabilize Uganda, he should remember that we control every inch of this country. No one plays games with the state and wins.”
This message has been widely interpreted as an admission that Besigye’s continued detention is politically motivated rather than legally justified.
A Call to Action
Kyagulanyi urged Ugandans both at home and abroad to take action against the Museveni regime’s growing repression. “The fear tactics, military trials, abductions—these are the desperate acts of a regime in decline. Museveni knows his time is up. The more he tightens his grip, the more Uganda slips from his control.”
He concluded with a rallying cry: “We must put our feet down and say ‘no more!’ to this nonsense. A new Uganda is within reach, but only if we stand and act as one.”
With each passing day, opposition to Museveni’s rule grows stronger, and the question remains: how much longer can his regime defy the will of the people before it crumbles under its own weight?
