A powerful visual of Uganda’s celebrated musicians — including Bobi Wine, Jose Chameleone, Eddy Kenzo, Bebe Cool, Sheebah Karungi, Cindy Sanyu, Radio & Weasel, and Juliana Kanyomozi — has recently reignited a public curiosity: Who inspired these stars to embrace local Ugandan sound over the then-dominant Lingala and other foreign genres?

In an era when Congolese rhumba, South African kwaito, and Jamaican dancehall dominated Uganda’s airwaves, these trailblazers chose to root themselves in Luganda, and some few local languages-infused music. It wasn’t an easy choice — nor a popular one at the time — but it turned out to be revolutionary. Uganda’s music industry now boasts a unique identity that resonates across East Africa and beyond.

But what, or rather who, stirred this radical shift?

Was it the vibrant Kadongo Kamu legends like Paul Kafeero and Herman Basudde? Could it have been Philly Bongole Lutaaya’s soulful melodies that inspired socially conscious artistry? Or was it Ragga Dee’s infusion of dancehall into local rhythms that sparked a new path?

Each artist in the photo has shaped — and been shaped by — Uganda’s cultural roots. Yet the question lingers: Who lit the spark? Who drew them home musically?

We want to hear from you.
