DAVIS, CALIFORNIA — Under the bright spring sun of Northern California, the University of California, Davis celebrated the graduation of one of its most accomplished and internationally seasoned students: Smith Kiiza, who received his Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Business and Corporate Law.
But behind the handshake, the diploma, and the academic regalia lies a story that spans continents, disciplines, and a deep conviction.
A Legal Life of Ambition and Service
Smith Kiiza’s life is defined by ambition and a dedication to service. A legal professional who has practiced in seven African countries, five Asian countries, and now the United States, Kiiza embodies the modern legal thinker—one who believes the law must answer the needs of both people and planet.
A Global Legal Practice Rooted in Justice
Born in Uganda, Kiiza entered the legal field with a calling to pursue justice in its broadest sense. His career began in East Africa, where he engaged in both corporate and public legal work before expanding his expertise into Southern and West Africa. Later, he worked in South and Southeast Asia, building a rare understanding of diverse legal systems.
“Law is not just about rules—it’s about relationships, governance, and dignity,” Kiiza has often said. His journey reflects that belief in action.
The American Chapter: UC Davis School of Law
Seeking to further specialize in corporate governance and legal innovation, Kiiza enrolled at UC Davis School of Law, one of the leading public law schools in the United States. His LL.M. in Business and Corporate Law is part of a broader goal: to strengthen ethical and sustainable legal frameworks in both developed and developing economies.
While studying in California, he continued his academic work as a Ph.D. candidate in Law, contributing pioneering research on the conservation of ancient insects—mayflies and dragonflies—linking biodiversity to legal and policy protections.
“It may sound unusual, but biodiversity needs legal protection,” he explained. “Understanding how ancient species survive can inform how we write environmental law for the future.”
Leadership Through Dialogue
Among his many contributions at UC Davis, Kiiza stood out for his leadership in academic debate. In a landmark seminar titled “The U.S. Impeachment and Presidential Immunity: A Constitutional Perspective,” he joined international classmates to examine how different countries approach presidential accountability.
His insights from Uganda, combined with his grasp of U.S. constitutional law, enriched the seminar with comparative depth. Faculty praised the group’s work as one of the most thoughtful legal analyses of the year.
Gratitude and Grounding
Despite his accomplishments, Kiiza remains grounded in humility and gratitude. He acknowledges the unwavering support of his family: Loy Joy Lwabaayi, Ronald Lwabaayi, Monica Namukwana, and Michael Kabuye, whose sacrifices enabled him to persevere through international transitions and academic rigor.
He also paid tribute to two key figures in his U.S. legal journey—attorneys Bets Stephen and Veronica Barba—whom he described as pillars of wisdom and compassion.
“They stood by me with precision, wisdom, and compassion. Their legal guidance made it possible for me to pursue this degree without fear or confusion.”
Looking Ahead
Now equipped with an LL.M. and a wealth of global experience, Smith Kiiza is preparing to launch his legal practice in the United States, with areas of focus including corporate accountability, environmental law, international trade, and human rights advocacy.
Long-term, he hopes to work with institutions that bridge the gap between law and development, whether in courtrooms, boardrooms, or policy circles.
A Legacy in Progress
As he exits the gates of UC Davis, Smith Kiiza is more than a graduate—he is a global jurist in motion. His journey is one of persistence, excellence, and vision. It serves as a powerful reminder that the law, when wielded with knowledge and integrity, can be a force for transformation.
“I carry with me the strength of my roots, the lessons of my journey, and the duty to serve across boundaries,” Kiiza reflected on his graduation day.
For those watching him today, one thing is clear: his journey is just beginning.
