Uganda Today Edition: Eddie Mutwe Produced in Lwengo Magistrates Court Under excruciating Pain

By Uganda Today News Desk

Edward Ssebuufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe and the head of security for National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, appeared before the Lwengo Magistrate’s Court on May 5, 2025, facing charges of robbery.

Mutwe was transported to court in a private vehicle, escorted by plainclothes security operatives who attempted to shield him from public view. Despite their efforts, journalists captured footage showing Mutwe in visible distress, struggling to walk unaided and exhibiting signs of physical pain.

NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi expressed concern over Mutwe’s condition, stating, “Despite these criminals trying to ensure journalists do not capture the state of comrade Eddie Mutwe, you can see him limping and unable to walk on his own. We have been told that his head and feet are swollen. He was badly beaten. He is unable to walk unaided. He is in a pathetic state. And yet, when he was abducted, he was very healthy. This is what Museveni’s son did to him! Instead of releasing him to get treatment, they rushed him to a court and a judicial officer shamelessly remanded him.”

The court proceedings were conducted under tight security, with limited access for media and the public. Mutwe was remanded to custody pending further hearings. His legal team has indicated plans to file a formal complaint regarding his alleged mistreatment while in detention.

This incident has drawn widespread attention, with human rights organizations calling for an independent investigation into the allegations of torture and for Mutwe to receive immediate medical attention.

As the case progresses, concerns remain about the treatment of political detainees and the upholding of human rights standards in Uganda.
