KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, today held a high-profile press conference announcing the 9th East African Revival – Kabale Convention, slated to take place from August 20–24, 2025, at Rugarama Grounds in Kabale District.

The announcement was made during a well-attended media briefing in Kampala, which brought together both local and international journalists through live streaming platforms. Among the notable dignitaries present were Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, the Chairperson of the Organising Committee and former Prime Minister of Uganda; fellow former Premier Amama Mbabazi; the Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, Bishop of Kigezi Diocese; and the Vicar of Namirembe Diocese, alongside several senior clerics and officials from the Kigezi Anglican community.

Historical Context: A Movement Rooted in East African Christian Heritage

Archbishop Kaziimba evoked the rich historical tapestry of the East African Revival Movement, tracing its roots to 1922, when Simeon Nsibambi and his wife, inspired by Anglican missionaries active in Buganda since 1877, began a spiritual awakening that would ripple across the region. With Namirembe as the then-headquarters of the Anglican faith in the region, Nsibambi carried the revival fire beyond Uganda’s borders—reaching as far as Gahini, Rwanda, and catalyzing a transnational wave of evangelism.

By 1935, the movement formally took root in Kigezi, emphasizing values such as hard work, cleanliness, education, good health, and most importantly, Christian love and fellowship. The movement, which rekindles every decade through a mega-gathering, has grown into a continental spiritual event.

9th Revival Convention: Cross-Border Gathering of Faith

This year’s event will be graced by The Most Rev. Henry Luke Orombi, retired Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, as the lead preacher. The Rugarama Convention is expected to attract over 30,000 congregants from across East and Central Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Boga-Zaire region).

Organisers revealed that the convention is projected to cost UGX 710 million, with logistical, hospitality, and outreach expenses planned to accommodate the multitudes anticipated.

Political Season Sensitivities

Notably, members of the press raised concerns about the timing of the convention, given its overlap with Uganda’s heightened political campaign season. Archbishop Kaziimba and the organising committee acknowledged the concern and affirmed that measures will be put in place to maintain the apolitical and spiritual nature of the gathering, in line with the revival’s founding principles.

Conclusion

The 9th East African Revival – Kabale Convention is not just a celebration of faith, but also a reaffirmation of a nearly century-old movement that has shaped the spiritual identity of millions in the region. With its expected grandeur, cross-border participation, and historical reverence, Rugarama 2025 is poised to become one of the most significant religious gatherings in East Africa this decade.
