Uganda’s transition towards renewable energy has received a major boost following the commencement of commercial operations at the 24-megawatt Ituka Solar Power Plant in Madi Okollo District, West Nile. The project is being viewed not merely as an electricity generation facility, but as a strategic investment capable of transforming one of Uganda’s historically underserved regions.
From Energy Deficit To Opportunity
For decades, West Nile grappled with unreliable electricity supply, limiting industrial growth and investment. The region’s connection to Uganda’s national grid in 2024 opened new possibilities, and the commissioning of the Ituka Solar Plant now strengthens the area’s energy capacity further.
The solar plant, developed at an estimated cost of US$27 million, is expected to generate nearly 54,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually—enough to serve more than 190,000 households while reducing carbon emissions.
Economic Benefits Beyond Electricity
Reliable power is expected to support agro-processing industries, cold storage facilities, manufacturing, digital enterprises and small businesses.
Economists argue that energy infrastructure remains one of the most important ingredients for attracting investment, creating jobs and improving household incomes.
West Nile, known for agriculture and trade with neighbouring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, could become a new centre for regional commerce if supported by strong infrastructure and investment.
Uganda’s Renewable Energy Ambition
Uganda continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio through hydropower, solar and biomass projects. As climate concerns rise globally, clean energy investments are increasingly viewed as pathways for sustainable growth.
The success of projects such as Ituka may encourage further private sector investment in Uganda’s energy sector.
