Nairobi To Host Africa’s First World Athletics Championships
NAIROBI, Kenya — Africa is set to enter a new chapter in international athletics after Nairobi was selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, making it the first African city to stage the global outdoor athletics showcase.
World Athletics announced the decision following its Council meeting in Budapest on September 15, 2026. Munich in Germany was selected to host the 2031 edition. (World Athletics)
The Nairobi decision is particularly significant for East Africa, a region whose athletes have for decades featured prominently in distance running but which has had limited opportunity to host athletics’ premier global championship.
A Major Recognition For Kenya
Kenya has established a strong record of hosting international athletics events. Nairobi previously hosted the World Athletics U18 Championships in 2017 and the World U20 Championships in 2021.

Uganda has its own experience in this area. Kampala hosted the World Cross Country Championships in 2017, while Gaborone, Botswana, hosted the World Athletics Relays in 2026.
