KAMPALA — Kampala’s evolving public transport landscape has received a major boost after E-Bus Xpress announced a significant reduction in transport fares on selected city routes, bringing renewed excitement among commuters seeking affordable, cleaner and more predictable transport options.

The electric bus service, which has become increasingly visible on Kampala roads, is currently operating along key urban corridors including City Square, Nakawa, Ntinda, Bukoto, Kamwokya and Wandegeya, creating an alternative to the often unpredictable fare systems associated with traditional taxi transport.

The reduction in fares from the earlier UGX 2,000 charge has particularly attracted daily city commuters and workers who rely on public transport for movement within Kampala.

New E-Bus Xpress Fares Excite Commuters

Under the revised fare structure, passengers travelling on selected routes will pay:

  • City Square → Nakawa: UGX 800
  • City Square → Wandegeya: UGX 800
  • City Square → Ntinda: UGX 1,500
  • City Square → Bukoto: UGX 1,500
  • Nakawa → Ntinda: UGX 800
  • Bukoto → Ntinda: UGX 800

Unlike conventional public transport where prices often fluctuate depending on weather, fuel prices, traffic conditions or rush-hour demand, E-Bus Xpress says its fares remain fixed and constant.

This means passengers know in advance exactly how much they will spend before boarding.

For many Kampala residents accustomed to abrupt fare hikes during rainy mornings and evening rush hours, the development is being viewed as a welcome relief.

Cashless Transport Takes Centre Stage

E-Bus Xpress has also introduced a completely cashless payment system aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing delays associated with handling physical cash.

Passengers can pay through MTN Mobile Money by dialing: 16522#  Or use Merchant Code: 594434

Cash payments are currently not accepted on the buses. Reports also indicate alternative digital payment options are being integrated as the system expands.

More Than Just a Bus Ride

The buses themselves represent a departure from Kampala’s traditional commuter experience.

Developed under Uganda’s electric mobility ambitions, the green-and-white Kayoola electric buses are equipped with modern commuter features including Wi-Fi connectivity, quieter operation and a more structured boarding system. The buses can reportedly accommodate up to 90 passengers and form part of a broader plan to modernize urban mobility in Kampala.

Government and transport planners view electric buses as an important intervention in reducing urban congestion and lowering carbon emissions within Kampala’s metropolitan area. Uganda’s long-term plans envision a much larger fleet operating across multiple urban centres nationwide.

A Potential Turning Point for Kampala Transport?

While traditional taxi operators have previously raised concerns regarding competition from state-backed electric transport initiatives, many city residents appear more interested in the immediate benefits: affordability, convenience and predictable fares.

For a city long associated with transport uncertainty, the emergence of E-Bus Xpress may signal the beginning of a new chapter in Kampala’s mobility story — one where commuters can ride cleaner, smarter and perhaps more cheaply.

Whether the initiative eventually reshapes public transport in Uganda’s capital remains to be seen, but for now, Kampala residents boarding at City Square are finding that the journey to the future may cost as little as UGX 800.
