UgandaToday: Unequal Pay? A Comparative Analysis of CEO Remuneration at Ethiopian Airlines and Uganda Airlines

In a recent scrutiny by Uganda’s Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSSASE), significant disparities in the remuneration of the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of state-owned airlines surfaced, raising questions about the financial management and accountability within Uganda Airlines.

Currently, Mr. Mesfin Tasew Bekele, the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, earns a substantial monthly salary of Shs 8.6 million (approximately $2,328), managing a vast fleet of 166 aircraft. This reflects a salary structure aligned with the success and revenue generation of one of Africa’s leading airlines. Importantly, Ethiopian economy boasts a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stand of $107.6 billion, showcasing its robust financial health and operational efficiency.

Upon reviewing the educational backgrounds of both CEOs, substantial differences emerge as well. Mr. Bekele holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Science in Communications Engineering, and an MBA from the Open University in the UK—credentials that underline the specialized knowledge and expertise he brings to Ethiopian Airlines. Conversely, the CEO of Uganda Airlines has a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Social Administration, which raises concerns regarding the suitability of qualifications for leading a national airline.

One of the most striking revelations from the inquiry pertains to the substantial disparity in executive compensation. As highlighted in previous discussions, the CEO of Uganda Airlines earns a monthly salary significantly higher than that of Ethiopian Airlines’ CEO, despite differences in fleet size and financial performance. These findings prompted questions about the rationale behind such remuneration, especially when juxtaposed against the airline’s financial challenges.

Furthermore, the report was expected to provide recommendations aimed at improving governance, enhancing operational efficiency, and restoring profitability within Uganda Airlines. The failure to publish the findings has left many stakeholders, including airline employees, industry experts, and the general public, in the dark regarding the committee’s conclusions and suggested strategies.

With the discrepancies between salaries and qualifications now laid bare, Uganda’s lawmakers are called to reassess the governance of state-owned enterprises in hopes of ensuring fairness and enhanced performance in the competitive aviation sector.
