UgandaToday: Kyagulanyi Secures Shortfall Supporter Endorsements in Record Time

Kampala | Uganda Today — Uganda’s leading opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), once again demonstrated its deep-rooted popularity after its presidential flag bearer, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, faced an unexpected hurdle from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

On Friday, the IEC announced that NUP had fallen short of the required supporter endorsements needed for Kyagulanyi’s nomination ahead of the 2026 presidential elections, citing deficiencies in 36 districts across the country.

Kyagulanyi’s Clarion Call

Immediately after the news broke, Kyagulanyi—popularly known as Bobi Wine—took to his social media platforms, urging supporters from the affected districts to flock to the party’s headquarters in Makerere Kavule to append their signatures in solidarity. His call received overwhelming response. By 7:00am, the party headquarters was a hive of activity, with hundreds of Ugandans streaming in and out to secure their candidate’s place on the ballot.

Supporters Turn Up in Droves

By 8:00am, all the required endorsements had been secured—and in excess. Some supporters who had travelled long distances, including a delegation of over 70 NUP faithful from Arua, added their signatures “just for formality,” highlighting the strong emotional and political attachment Ugandans continue to have with the party and its leader.

One supporter commented, “We came all the way to ensure our signatures are counted for His Excellency Bobi Wine. Nothing can stop the will of the people.”

NUP’s Popularity Reaffirmed

The eleventh-hour scramble underscored NUP’s grassroots influence and the loyalty it commands across Uganda. While the IEC’s announcement was intended as a procedural requirement, it inadvertently showcased the party’s mobilization power and the trust many Ugandans place in Kyagulanyi as a symbol of change.

As one NUP supporter remarked on social media, “The struggle continues—our voices will not be silenced.”

Next Step: Nomination Day

With the endorsement hurdle cleared, attention now turns to Tuesday, September 23, 2025, when Kyagulanyi is expected to officially be nominated by the IEC. His clearance will formally mark the beginning of a high-stakes presidential race that is already shaping up as a fierce contest between the ruling NRM and Uganda’s leading opposition force.
